Baby led weaning questions

I have a 5 month old who is beginning to show interest in solids. I planned on waiting until she turned 6 mo to introduce anything.

How old was your dd when you started and what were some cues you picked up on that made you know it was time to introduce solids?

What are some good foods to try? I'm paranoid about the choking aspect.

I'm new to the whole BLW concept and my first dd started with pures. She is a picky eater as a toddler so I wanted to see if BLW would help my next dd be more welcoming of different foods.

Any tips or info is appreciated!

Re: Baby led weaning questions

  • Read the book - or websites - on BLW'ing.  The whole point is to use such large pieces (spears) that the kid is holding onto the spear of food in his/her hand while eating, so choking is very, very difficult (they still have a hold on the food!)  (Gagging is a different story - it's important to know the difference between gagging and choking.)

Some of our first foods were sweet potato fries (homemade), avocado, and banana.

  • I had planned to wait til 6 months after reading the website. After I read the book (which discussed readiness in greater depth) I started just over a week before 6 months. She sat well with assistance (could hold the position if placed sitting), and was picking up food from my plate and putting it in her mouth.

We didn't plan it, just one mealtime she was up to her tricks with food stealing and we decided to let her eat. She had spears cut from my baked potato and strips of my steak. She sucked and gummed the steak til it felt like styrofoam, no juice remained. She ate all the tips from her potato as evidenced from her diapers :) I really didn't expect her to eat right away from what I read, but she eats the majority of what we give to her (only the handles and pieces that fall off remain).

Easiest for LO to eat (so good starters) overcooked broccoli because the florets practically fall off into her mouth when gummed and are too small to choke on, and carrots cooked til soft. Anything we eat except choking hazards (like raw veg) and honey we give to her. The only thing she has turned down is bell pepper.

DS will be 6 months later this week, and we're planning to start tonight with avocado and mango.

He is sitting unassisted, and doggedly attempting to take anything we're eating.

  • The biggest readiness sign for BLW is that LO can sit unassisted.  Everything else - grabbing at food, etc. - really doesn't mean anything in regards to solids.  But the sitting is important for BLW as far as being physically ready to handle food and swallow.

Good first foods are things like roasted butternut squash and sweet potato sticks - soft foods that are easy for baby to hold in her fist since she likely doesn't have the pincer grasp yet.  The great thing about BLW is that you just give them food and let them figure out the rest - play is part of the learning experience.

  • If you're not confident, get the book (from the library or just buy it) and read it. Knowing what to expect and how to be safe is important.

I started a bit before 6months, but he didn't eat anything for ages.

  • We started very slowly after 6 months. I found very soft broccoli to be very good and he had no trouble with it. He also loved plain baked pollock which flaked apart easily and was so soft for him.

Expect some gagging, it will happen.

  • we were about 5-6mo old and DD wanted nothing to do with purees. I started with the basics, speared, cooked slightly, and then served with us at the table. Carrots were a hit, baked apple rings, avocado, frozen grapes and peas are great for teething older babies, sweet potatoes, broccoli, asparagus. Take advantage of summer produce :) Have fun!
