Breast Pumps Covered by Insurance

Has anyone who has recently given birth gotten a breast pump that's covered by their insurance? I was just curious how the whole process went. My insurance said that I'd need a "prescription" and could get one from the hospital when I'm there, has anyone else done this? Is it just your standard type of pump or one of the big hospital ones?

I'm bummed that all mine covers is a manual pump, but I guess that's better than nothing. They told me to get it through my hospital when the kiddo is born.

I have Aetna and just needed a prescription. I had the option of ordering it from an online vendor or a local medical supply place. I just took the prescription and my insurance card to a local medical supply store and walked out with the pump I wanted (Hygiea Enjoye). I got it about half way through my pregnancy.

I have BCBS and I called them to make sure it was covered first. Then my dr wrote me a prescription which was filled at a medical supply store. I got the Madela pump in style and paid 65, my insurance covered the rest.

All I did was tell my OB and he said to let the nurse who discharges me that I need a pump. I filled out some paperwork and took it home.

We have health partners and I just told my nurse at the hospital and they took care of everything. I delivered at UMMC. It was ridiculously easy.

I also have health partners. My OB wrote me a prescription around 7 mos and I has to purchase from a medical supply company. I use Park Nicollet so purchased through their pharmacy store at Methodist Hospital. I could pick from a bunch of options but got the Medela pump in style. It was back ordered though and took about 2 wks to come in. Overall super easy!

I would call your member services number just to confirm the process overall I was shocked at the ease.

I got a prescription for one after I delivered once I knew that BF-ing was going to work for me. I got mine from the home medical supply on-site, but they were also available from the hospital pharmacy. I got the Medela Pump In Style, but I believe they now have the Medela Freestyle available as well at Fairview.

I just looked into this myself. I have BCBS and was told that they would cover a rental or purchased one at 80% once I meet my $1,000 deductible. The purchased one at Methodist Hospital is the double electric which is about $250-300. Or, you can rent the hospital-grade pumps (great for premies) which I'm guessing is about $1,000. Not sure how much rental is, but I was told that the double electric would be adequate. I would stay clear of manual pumps as I've heard they aren't sufficient and can decrease milk supply, plus it takes longer to pump which isn't great for working moms. I don't know if this is true, but based on what other girls have posted I'm wondering if it is---you apparently need to get an order put in before you deliver or else insurance won't cover it. That is a rumor and I just heard it from a friend, but I'm definitely going to ask my provider about this next prenatal visit to ensure I have no hiccups in December.

I also have BCBS, and the doc just wrote a prescription for it while I was in the hospital after having my DD, and they brought one up to me from the store downstairs (at Methodist.) It was a super nice Medela pump (forgot which one, perhaps the Pump in Style?) I didn't have to pay a dime (since I have an HSA and my deductible was already shot from the cost of delivery.) The nurses also taught me how to use it in the hospital so that was really helpful.
