Babies: 9 - 12 Months

best 1st sippy cups

Hey everyone!  I'm a FTM trying to transition my 9 month old into sippy cups (her Dr. said it was time to start trying).  I was wondering what the best sippy cups were for the first time?  Also, anyone have any tips that seemed to help them figure it out.  We're on day 3 of trying to figure it out and so far she just bites the nipple, handle, etc.  I tried taking the top off and showing her to tip but she can't figure it out with the top on.  I have a munchkin bottle and a tommy tippie one.  I took the valve out of the tommy tippie one but she can't figure it out.  I know it takes time but I didn't know if anyone had any secrets?  :)  Thanks!!!

  • I like the Playtex trainer straw cups. She picked it up in no time!

  • Yea, the Nuk Learner Cup.

After about a month, it's recommended to switch over to straw cups (then to "big kid" cups around a year), FWIW, so don't go throwing too much $ into it.  https://www.raisehealthyeaters.com/2011/06/5-things-parents-should-know-about-starting-and-stopping-sippy-cups/

  • my advice is skip sippys and go to straw cups. As for getting the hang of straw cups, pinch a regular straw trapping water inside then put it in LOs mouth so they get that water comes out of it. It was a tip passed on to me from and OT. Worked like a charm. It took about 3 days of doing that in the morning and then she'd be good all day drinking. After that I no longer had to do the trick and now she drinks on her own from her straw cup all the time.

  • Thanks for the tip about pinching the straw.  Will have to try that.
  • Beb will only tolerate the ZoliBot. It's great because the straw is weighted so she can drink from any angle.  It's not 100% leak proof but it doesn't spill everywhere.  If you put anything but water in it I highly suggest also getting the straw cleaner kit. They have a good price and free shipping for both at Nordstrom.

  • We started with a non-leak proof cup from Ikea, then we went to take n toss cups.  We tried the Nuby ones and she didn't get it at all.  We also tried the Playtex straw cup and she has a hard time with that one too, the straw is too small.  She has no trouble with a camel bak straw and bite valve though.  She likes mine so much I bought her one of her own.
