Not examined well enough!!

Every time I go to the doctor, I sit and sit and sit, and then when the doctor actually gets in the room, I feel like he isn't looking over everything that he should. This is my first pregnancy, so I'm not exactly sure how Dr. visits should go, but I feel like they should be more than a quick measurement and him telling me everything in my urine looks good and my weight is good...Should there be more??

Re: Not examined well enough!!

  • No there shouldn't be more if you are having a normal pregnancy.

  • He should be listening to LO's heart beat as well. The nurse should also be checking your BP. If you aren't having any complications or complaints at this point they don't do anything else until starting internal exams at about 36 weeks. .
  • Sounds pretty normal if you're having an uneventful pregnancy..they come in, maybe go over some stats and talk a minute about anything going on, measure your belly, listen to hb and that's it! I love those 5 minute visits!
  • Pretty typical for OB care.  Midwifery care (often times) is different.  When I was seeing a midwife I'd sit waiting for her maybe 5 minutes and then my appointment would last another 45 minutes of us chatting and talking about different things that may be happening during whatever stage of the pregnancy I was in.  Then of course she'd listen to the heartbeat and measure.  It was nice because I'm a FTM and even though I knew about most of the things we went over I did learn things I hadn't heard before.  Like at my 20th week appointment she taught me Spinning Babies techniques to get the baby into a head down position.  That was handy.

But since switching to a doctor at 32 weeks because of a move I've been getting the more typical experience.  Waiting in the waiting room for 20 minutes, then in the room for another 10, then about 10 minutes of facetime with the doctor.  It's definitely different but really nothing wrong with it.  She checks what she needs to check and answers my questions.  She just doesn't initiate ideas like my midwife did and our face time is way shorter.   I still think she's awesome and I trust her fully with my birth and that's all that really matters.

Anyway, if you are looking for something more try midwifery care.  But know that not all are created equal, some are pretty much the same as OBs these days in the appointment department.  Others still practice the idea that they should really get to know you and you them before the birth and will schedule longer appointments.

  • Normal. Generally the doc will also answer your questions, so if there's so,etching that you're wondering about, ask away. Otherwise, everything is fine and normal, so relax!

  • That's all they do at mine too.  They take my weight and BP before seeing the doctor, the doctor measures my tummy and listens to the heartbeat and then asks if I have any questions or concerns.  I don't think there is much else to do at this stage, after 36 weeks or so I believe they look at more.

  • The less that happens, the better. This is normal. I get my weight and BP checked. Then the doc checks the heart beat and then measures me. Then she asks if I have any questions and then I leave.

  • Not really? What exactly do you think they should do each time? lol

If you want "more" of an appointment, I would suggest coming up with a list of questions for each visit to ask your OB.

Every appointment I've had has gone like this:
    - give urine specimen
    - get weighed
    - nurse goes over any questions I have/results of previous testing/gives me orders for any testing I need to get done before next visit
    - Dr. comes in, asks a few questions, normally "Any spotting or cramping?"
    - Dr. does a quick US - quick scan of the baby and HB check (my Dr. doesn't use the doppler)
    - schedule next appointment

I'm usually in there, total less than 30 min. and that's if I have to wait a little bit for the Dr. - the actual appointment itself is probably 10 minutes.  Dr. hasn't measured my fundal height yet.

Sounds typical. If you want there to be more discussion, you need to be the one bringing up the topics that are important to you. OBs are just there to catch the baby and oversee any medical incidents. I actually like when OBs leave patients alone unless there is a medical issue.

This. My appointments sound just like yours OP, and I'm grateful!

This.   You should hear the HB on the doppler at every appt and have a blood pressure check.  Other than that if things are normal there isn't too much at this point. So other than those two things, your appts sound about right to me.

  • Nope that is about it if you are having a healthy pregnancy. The only thing you didn't list that my OB does is check the heartbeat.
