Teething and Coughing?

Anyone else noticed LO coughing more frequently during teething? At first I thought it was just for attention, it sounds like a fake cough, and she'd smile afterwards. So we stopped giving her any special attention when she did it, but now she's doing it randomly...it seems to be most frequent when she's babbling or laughing. It doesn't seem to bother her, and she doesn't have a fever or runny nose or anything else that indicates illness- and she's her normal happy self. She's been showing signs of teething for months now, but they've gotten more apparent the last couple of weeks (more drool, more chewing on things, etc) and I'm wondering if the extra saliva isn't what's causing her to cough a little. Am I way off base here or is this possibly teething related?

Re: Teething and Coughing?

  • Morgan is doing the same thing and I thought it was fake couging also.  She does have a tooth coming in on the bottom that we noticed last week. I sent our doctor a message asking about it so when she responds I'll post here.  She has also been sneezing a lot so I thought the cough may be allergy related.  We have cats so I don't know if she's allergic to them or if it's all the pollen in the air around us.

  • When Sam's teeth cut last week the drooling went from constant to a constant flood. He would get a rattle in his throat from it and cough a lot to clear his throat. Not fun, but it's much better now that his first two teeth are in.

Yes, I did ask the pedi about it 2 months ago and she said it was just the increase in saliva. I noticed DS was also experimenting with this sound a little bit too. So he's been making a coughing sound without actually coughing.

  • YES! She started doing it two weeks ago and continues still but comes in spurts. Am thinking it is some sort of post nasal drip thing.

  • My dd does this as well, she also chokes and gags on her spit. She has so much in her mouth from teething.

  • L has been doing this too! He is definitely teething... has one tooth already and another one about to pop through...and we've been wondering if he's just "fake coughing" for attention. Very interesting!
