Cloth Diapering

Help me with wool...

I am doing something wrong. I like the idea of hemp fitted + wool covers at night. The problem is that I cannot seem to get the wool to be water proof. We always end up having to change LO at 1 am when she, her clothes, and the sheet are soaked through. I have lanolized (used both pure lanolin and CJ's wool wash with lanolin built in) but it seems I'm doing something wrong - any tricks for knowing how to tell if you've lanolized properly (besides a 2 am leak!!).

If it matters, I have babee greens:

Help!

I'll try rubbing it in directly after the wash. So far, I had been melting a small amount of lanolin in hot water, mixing that in with the tepid water and swishing the diapers, letting them sit for a while (30 mins) and then squeezing and hanging dry. They do feel a little sticky, but maybe they need to be stickier...

  • I can't remember where I (on a blog I found on pinterest I think) but I read that wool (especially new) may need to soak for longer.  It recommended 3 hours to overnight.  Since both my disana cover and the one I crocheted were soaked when I first used them, I tried soaking my disana overnight (and I used way more lanolin - like 1.25" from the lansinoh tube) and now it works great!  DD was fussy around 5:30am so I went in and brought her to bed with me and the wool was totally dry (on the outside)!  DH changed her when they got up for the day (not sure when exactly, probably around 9am) and he didn't say anything about the cover feeling damp, so I'm assuming it was fine.  SO glad I got it figured out. :)

  • How many times have to washed/dried the fitted diaper? Hemp will definitely need to be washed/dried at least 10 times before it is fully prepped and okay for overnight use.

I also second what the pp's mentioned about lanolizing the wool cover again and using more lanolin. I use about 1 tsp+ of solid lanolin when lanolizing a cover, a little more if it's longies. I've also had to lanolize a cover 3-4 times before it was ready for overnight use.

  • the cashmere covers, needs more lanoline, than a wool cover.you said the you squeeze and hang dry your covers.you don't need to do it,if you do it,your covers are going to lost the shape.you may need to see a video on you tube and see how they wash and lanolize wool cover.after you wash and lanolize your cover.you need to lay flat on a towel,re-shape the wool, and then roll the towel to remove all the water from your covers, then put the covers in a flat surface  where you think your covers can get dry.

  • You may need two tablespoon of lanoline, also for my understanding cashmere is more for day time.the reason why. Cashmere will take longer to adsorb the lanoline, because of the rabbit hair.i also recommend you to do it in a salad bowl or small container.

  • Just another thought besides your wool - are you sure the particular fitted you're using for overnight is absorbent enough for your LO overnight?  Not all fitteds are good for overnight use.  Your wool can only work as well as the diaper underneath.  I would try adding a hemp doubler to your fitted and see if it helps.  Or I would look for a different fitted to use that's designed to hold up to overnights - Sbish OBFs are a good place to start, they are more affordable than some of the other overnight fitteds out there.
