Nurseries and Baby Gear

Baby in a one bedroom apartment!

Hello all!

My husband and I just found out that we are expecting 2/1/2014! We are very excited!

We have been planning a move about 8 hours away, but now we have decided to wait until the baby is 2-3 months old to make the move. Since we'll be moving in less than a year, we've decided that it isn't worth it to move into a bigger place here, just to move again shortly after. Any suggestions on making it work with a newborn in a 1 bedroom apartment? We are going to wait to buy a crib and other nursery furniture until we move and plan on just getting a moses basket and/or pack n play for the baby to sleep in until then.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Baby in a one bedroom apartment!

  • We have a 2 bedroom but for the first 3 months we lived like we had a 1 bedroom!!

If you're planning on nursing having baby nearby is a must ::IMO:: We got a bassinet 2nd hand from a close family friend and just bought new sheets. I took a dresser that we already owned that was waist high and put her changing pad on it.

In the drawers I put her world: current sized clothes, bibs, burp rags, towels, swaddle blankies, spare sheet. We actually were able to fit diapers and wipes on our dresser so they were easy access all the time.

You will also still want something to set baby in during the day while you are in the bathroom, kitchen, etc. Our life saving device was our swing that she napped in and just loved.

Don't worry about nursery...you will have plenty of late night feedings to Pinterest ideas!

  • We live in a 2 bedroom, 600 square foot house. We have a 22 month old and one on the way. Our son has always slept in the pack n play in our room. Its made it so nice to not have to walk across a house in the middle of the night. For feedings I basically walked to the end of the bed to grab him and brought him back to bed. The SnuggleNest was great for the first few months for the crazy nights of feeding. We finally cleared our second bedroom out, which was a laundry/closet/office/craft room. We were able to set a toddler bed up and a dresser and the new baby will sleep in our room again. Make sure you only buy what is necessary. We used the swing a lot in the first year or so, then we swapped it out for the walker. We also keep big toys down to a minimum and are always rotating through toys and getting rid of things. The white noise machine was a huge must for us as well sine every sound we made was heard by our son. Good luck!!

  • Our son slept in a RnP next to our bed for 7 months. The only thing I used the nursery for was storage.

  • We were also in a one bedroom 700 sq ft condo until our LO was 4 months old.  Let me reassure you that it is plenty of space for you and your LO.  We have a mini crib (which she is still sleeping in) set against the wall in the dinning room.  We cleared our round dinning table to use as the changing table (w/changing pad) along with a basket fill with her diapers, cream, wipes and anything she uses frequently and also set aside another set in our bedroom In case we want to change her there.  We also cleared out our buffet drawers for all her clothes (mostly onesies and undershirts), socks and burping cloth.  For her bath, we bath her in our bath tub with an infant bath mat that can be hung dry in the shower after.  Newborn really doesn't need much in the beginning.  Just be sure you have a comfy chair or sofa for feeding and sometimes, sleeping.  The only baby gears we had the first few months was the infant bucket/car seat, a soft blanket on the floor and after a couple of months, a play mat/gym for LO.

Most importantly, be sure you have everything you need and are comfortable.

    Good luck.

  • The PPs have given some excellent advice!  I would probably wait on the crib so that you don't have to move it and just get a Pack n Play.  It will fit better next to your bed as well.  You can get a small dresser to use as a changing table and for storing all of the baby's clothes and necessities.

  • We lived in a 1br, 5th floor walk-up, for baby's first year. It can be done! A lot of baby gear is extra fluff. Remember that you don't need things like sippy cups or a high chair just yet and that will help you downsize the registry lists which are always IMHO waaay too long.

We made a little 'nook' in the corner of our bedroom. DS slept in a PnP. The PnP had extra storage attached including a hamper.  I had two baskets on a low end table nearby with receiving blankets & burp cloths since you always need those. Baby clothes were in a large dresser my husband also used. I tried to stay super organized with this so everyone was happy :) A drawer for each tops, bottoms and pjs worked well for us.  If you have closet space (and I realize most apts don't) a hanging organizer for sweaters works nicely for baby clothes as well. I'm currently using a hanging organizer as we've moved (ha!) and this was the easiest way to get DS's room up and going.

  • Congratulations!!

I would definitely recommend using a pack and play for the time being, until you move into your new home.  My only addition to that would be to recommend buying a pack and play mattress.

Anytime we've vacationed with our daughter, she's had a hard time sleeping in the pack and play through the night.  The mattress seems to make it WAY more comfortable.  Definitely worth the investment, especially if your little one would be sleeping in the pack and play every night.  Plus you could invest in a pack and play that has a diaper changer attachment and bassinet.  We had one and it worked very well for us.  We have a pack and play that's very similar to this one:

I would recommend buying a nice dresser for clothing storage.  Plus that's one less thing you have to purchase after you move.  We never used a shorter dresser with a changing pad...our daughter squirms way too much for that set-up.  We just bought a regular, nice-sized dresser and it has plenty of room for all of her clothing.  Plus I'm not sure what your closet situation is like, but you always could add an additional tension rod to your closet if you need more room to hang your baby's clothing.

Best of luck as you prepare to welcome your new baby!

  • If you want to get a swing, get a travel size swing. Then you can fold it up and put it away in a closet, etc when not using it. We have a small home and we used this swing. Worked great and I could put it away when the baby wasn't in it.
After 2 years of TTC, our daughter was born on Oct 31, 2011!
