NBR: Anyone have an IUD?

Hi there, I know this isn't working mom related, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with an IUD?  None of my friends have one.  I am still breastfeeding so I would most likely get the one that doesn't have any hormones.  Does anyone have experience with either type?  I don't think I will have more children (things are not going well at all with his father) anytime soon or possibly ever so I think this may be a good option for me. I feel a little nervous about it though so any comments are appreciated. Thanks!

  • I have mirena and so far, so good. This is actually the 2nd time I've had it - first time, it rejected it (it's like 1 in 1000 chance so don't worry!) I've had the 2nd one for over a month now and have had zero problems.

You can expect bleeding on & off for up to 6 months (I think) although, I didn't have any bleeding until I got my period last week, which was a normal 5 day period.

Some people say placement of the IUD hurts - it was just uncomfortable for myself. I got the 5 year one and plan on getting it out at the 2-3 yr. mark.

Also, I'm breastfeeding and haven't had any problems related to the Mirena.

  • I am on my second Mirena.

Neither one were painful when they went in, my first one was easy coming out and I got pg with DS2 two month later.

I didn't bleed on and off when it went in. My period was still regular when it came back 9 month PP after DS1 and it was really lite and lasted 2 days. No cramps.

I EBF DS1 until 14 months, and still EBF DS2.

I didn't have mood swings or low sec drive.

The one negative thing I have to say about it is trusting it to work, lol.

  • I'm also on my second mirena. It's fine to have while bf'ing and I love it. Insertion wasn't too bad, and I either don't get a period or it's very light. I got pregnant right away after I took it out. I don't know anyone with a paraguard, but I chose mirena over paraguard because mirena is supposed to make periods lighter and shorter and paraguard can make them heavier.

  • I've decided to get one after this LO is born.  I also hope to breastfeed. This is our second child and we will probably try for a third in a few years which is why we're trying out IUD for now. DH will get a vasectomy when we are sure we're done.

Mirena doesn't affect breastfeeding.  The hormones are local only.

I have had mine for almost three years and love it.  I never have a cycle anymore and it was horrendous pre-twins.  I will continue to get them until menopause.

  • I have Paragard, the copper one without hormones. I love it! You never have to think about it except once a month to check the strings. No side effects for me although some people get heavier periods ... a lot heavier.

They're supposedly 99 percent effective ... so statistically better than the mini pill, and any other form of BC except, you know, abstinence and Essure.

  • I've had Mirena for almost six months and I looooove it. I was breastfeeding, having trouble remembering the mini-pill, and wanted something more reliable. I chose Mirena because I had heavy periods pre-baby and didn't want to risk heavier periods with the Paragard. Insertion was not bad at all - certainly less painful than cervical checks during pregnancy/labor. I had some cramping and spotting for a couple of days. I did get my first postpartum period a week after insertion, and had it the next two months before getting a two month break, but that was no big deal. No effect on my milk supply. My husband could feel the strings at first and found that painful; my OB shortened them and now it's no problem.

I had the Paragard (I have a history of clots and can't take hormones).  I had to have it taken out because my body was trying to expel it.  It was very painful when that happened, but up until then it was fine.  My reaction was a weird/unusual one and if that hadn't happened I would have kept it.  It did seem to make my periods heavier but they are already heavy enough post-baby that it wasn't a big difference to me.

Yep, I have a mirena and love it. However, if I really didn't want another kid with my son's father I would A) Not have sex with him, or B) Also use a condom.

  • I had the paragard. It didn't affect my hormones at all, but man oh man did my periods SUCK. They were super heavy and the cramps were awful. After I had DD I got my tubes tied. The paragard is good for 10 years.

  • I'm on my third mirena and I haven't had a problem with any of them. With this one I spot a little bit here and there. I had a tubal after DD2 and had the third mirena put in because the cramping and periods were so awful, and its helping.
  • I had the copper T IUD (the one without hormones). For me, it got dislodged and fell out, and I decided not to replace it for fear that I'd pay for it again, and it would just fall out again. Also, I could feel the strings stabbing me... although that could have been the doctor who just left them too long. It wasn't the way to go for me.
  • I just got my Copper IUD (paragard) in last month. After 10yrs of not having any issues with bc pills, i can barely remember to brush my teeth before I leave the house so its a good option for me. I've had about 7 different friends that have had mirena, and they all have developed a cyst by the end of their 5 years. 3 of them got another one because that didn't bother them. I was scarred about getting it in, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I had to figure out where my strings are, since you have to check them after each period and i could barely find them so they definitely aren't noticeable during sexual activities. It was 100% covered by my insurance since the health care updates the other year. Two weeks are insertion I had to go back for a string check and then I got the okay to not use condoms- just check the string before sex.
  • I adored my Paragard.  I liked knowing that there were less artificial hormones in my body, but mostly I liked forgetting about it altogether!  I hadn't had children yet so some doctors found placement controversial, but it went in, did its job, and came out without much incident.
