I want to start making my own baby food and was wondering what others use for preparation & storing. I've been to wholesomebabyfood website, but thought I'd ask fellow nesties. Also was wondering what sippy cups you would recommend. Thanks!
We use the magic bullet and just make a little bit at a time (enough for 3-4 feedings). No need for storage, because we just store it in the magic bullet containers and spoon into a little bowl. I have some Gerber tupperware type bowls and some without lids from IKEA that are great.
When I made my own baby food (DS is 15 mth now) I bought 6 ice cube trays and stored in there. Cover it with plastic wrap, then tin foil. Once they where frozen I dumped them in a labeled zipblock bag.
To prepare I bought frozen fruits and veggies that where out of season and then fruits and veggies that where in season fresh. Thaw, put in blender, thin with water. You can get really creative with all the foods so mix and match and see what your baby likes. Have fun with it!
I use a veggie/rice steamer to steam the food (it's handy because it has a timer, so you don't have to watch it constantly). I used to puree in my small food processor, but now I just mush with a fork. I then put them in ice cube trays, freeze, then put them in ziplock bags for freezing.
As for the sippy cup, DD seems to really enjoy her Nuby. She was using (by using I mean mostly playing with) the one that has a bottle nipple. I just bought her a new one that has a 'sippy' nipple...we'll see how that goes. They don't drip though, so I like them!
I steamed or baked everything (except banana and avacado) then used a food processor to puree, freeze in ice cube trays then transfered to quart size zip lock bags. Which I label and date. Once he moved on to some more chunky things I just mashed by hand instead of using the food processor. For bananas I cut them in half (because he doesnt eat a whole one in one sitting) leave the peel on and freeze them in zip lock bags. They turn out really good and thaw quickly. They are really soft then so you dont need to puree them. I used wholesomebabyfood.com a lot, they have great info.
DS loves his Nuby (soft spout) and did a lot better with it than with his Dr. Browns (hard spout). Its doesnt leak or rush out at all, he def has to work for it.
The Nuby spouts are too big for DD's mouth so we use the Avent Magic Cup with the silicone beginners spout. First I gave it to her without the valve so she could learn that liquid comes out of the cup (did it with water in highchair - very messy!). Now I give it to her with the valve and she drinks from it with no problems!

Re: Making your own baby food & sippy cup recommendations
I just use our blender to puree the food after I cook it and freeze it in ice cube trays. Once they are frozen I transfer them to freezer bags.
We have been using he Nuby sippy cup. So far that is the only one that he will take.

Haven't ventured into sippy cup land yet....

We just mash up what we have around
We use the disposable sippy's. They wash up easily, are bpa free and cheap!
