Time Outs

When did you start time outs for your little ones?

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Re: Time Outs

  • I haven't started with DD2 yet, she'd smile and run the other way.  She wouldn't understand the concept yet.  DD1 I started right before her 3rd birthday when the devil came out.

We haven't started. She wouldn't understand and there is no way I am putting her in the crib for punishment (it seems like so many people do that).

  • I haven't with DS1 but I have put a few of his toys in timeout.

  • We started it a few weeks ago. I put DS in a corner and stand very close to him so he can't run away. He usually cries so bad that standing is optional. I only do this for biting and repeated hitting. He's only in the corner for 30 seconds-1.5 minutes. If you are looking for suggestions on a time frame, use one minute per year of age (goes with attention span).

  • DS only gets a time out when he repeatedly hits us or throws things at us or the dogs. It usually lasts 30 seconds- 1 minute and I use a little stool for him to sit in the family room. I give him a reason why its not okay to hit or throw things. The thing that works for me is being consistent every time. It will sink in for him.

  • I started a few months ago when DD put herself in timeout after biting her brother.  Clearly she gets it though.

I have been trying it with ds, but he doesn't get it. He sits on the step when he knows he did something wrong (usually throwing his sippy cup or toys), but he just giggles and says "nononono"! because that is what I say.

It's kind of funny but I do my serious face and he still laughs.
