prefolds vs inserts

Do any of you just use prefolds to stuff pockets with? I was considering doing this instead of investing in inserts but I'm not sure how absorbancy compares or if there is something else I'm looking past as to why this wouldn't work. TIA

    Are they a lot bulkier? I've been stocking up on GMD prefolds. Would the newborn or smalls be the best size to use to stuff pockets? Sorry for all the questions... Just don't want to spend a ton of money on inserts if I can just use my prefolds
