How can planning a nursery closet be so hard?

Mobile users: How can planning a nursery closet be so hard?

So I spent seriously all day yesterday trying to figure out what we're doing with the closet in the nursery. I felt a little crazy-- dragged DH to Lowes, and then 30 minutes away to Ikea where I almost had a melt down. Everything just seemed ridiculously complicated and overpriced. I don't see why rods and shelves should cost so much and why you have to get a whole "system."

DH was like "I don't see why we can't just do a rod across the top and put everything else at the bottom like a normal closet" and I almost cried, haha.

So anyway, we came home and I ordered some things from Home Depot that are cheaper than the crappiest "closet system" I saw and I think will be nicer:

Got this bookshelf https://www.homedepot.com/p/South-Shore-Furniture-Freeport-Pure-White-5-Shelf-Bookcase-7250768C/203011388#.UdBg7vmgVCY which I'm planning to put on the left with some cube baskets in the shelves and then two $10 extendable rods to go on the right between the bookshelf and the wall. Hope it works the way I'm envisioning it.

  • I'm with you! We are adding a closet and connecting a bathroom via a new doorway to our dining room in order to make it into a nursery.

I am completely overwhelmed by closet design options and outrageous costs!

There are two beautiful corner cabinets in the room and I'm half tempted to just take out the top shelves in both and place a little clothes rod at the tops and just using those!

    Sounds doable to me!

  • I stalked Pinterest for "nursery closet" pins for several weeks and solicited BTDT mom advice before putting pen to paper and drafting out what I wanted.  Planning it out before shopping is much easier - and cheaper in the end because you can shop around for the best prices on hardware and other components.

My husband is DIY woodworker, so he's going to build the closet out based on my drawing (which he has heavily modified due to man knowledge), but it's been like pulling teeth to motivate him to get started.  He didn't see the need to add extra storage - until we started receiving gifts and buying stuff.  Now that our house looks like the warehouse of a baby surplus store, he's eager to add the storage!

I saw that and it did inspire me! But I'm pretty sure she said she paid well over the $400 minimum, and our budget for this project was about $100, haha.  I'm actually thinking the plan I mentioned should look similar to one side of hers--like with rods only on the one side, and will cost around $100.

  • I plan on pinteresting the crap out of ideas ... I am with you on the overpriced shelving everywhere. We move the middle of July so once I get into see the closet space, I'll start planning then!

  • We just put an old bookshelf we had in the closet and organize everything and then the other half of the closet we used to hang the clothes and put larger items underneath.

We're in the same boat - thankfully, the closet in the nursery has some built in shelving on the far left side which will be perfect for storing things such as diapers.  As for the other open space, we're planning on putting at least one 9 cube organizer (maybe 2, one on top of the other) and also a pre-fab closet organizer from Delta (can get at Target).

We went to HD, and they had some pictures, we took the measurements with us, and just started putting it together.  We have 2 "towers" in the middle, and poles on the sides.  Once we were there it was really easy.  We put it together in no time at all.  I think ours was around $150? But I did drawers and a laundry basket  in the one tower that was expensive

  •  I bought this little number at Target for $28.

I figure I can just take it out when they have normal sized clothing!  It won't be nearly as nice as yours, but it fits a tight budget and doesn't take installation.
