TV time for LO

How much TV is your LO watching? Are you limiting the TV time now that they are toddlers?

I'm a little embarrased to say that my TV is on the majority of thetime in my house. There are some shows that DD loves and actually watches, the rest of the time the TV is just background noise. She will stop and listen to songs that are on and she likes certain commercials too. I definitely don't have her plopped in front of the TV for long periods of time.  I will say, in my defense, that she spends plenty of time playing inside and outside. We take several walks throughout the day and we run several errands a day as well.

What is everyone else's situations like?

  • We generally don't have the TV on when DD is awake. It was a big adjustment for us because we were both TV addicts, but I don't want her to grow up needing background noise all the time.

I'll occasionally turn the news on for a few minutes, but that's about it.Because we Skype with my ILs all the time, DD actually thinks the news anchors are talking to her and she'll stand there and say hi had wave to them. It's super cute.

  • DS almost never watches TV now. When he was younger and immobile and I needed something to occupy him so that I could get something done, I would put on Bubble Guppies or a kids cartoon movie of some sort and put him in either his bouncer or jumper depending on how old he was at the time. As he got older he lost interest and would just play with the stuff on his jumper and ignore the Tv. Now he is always playing and the TV isn't even on unless he's asleep and I'm relaxing and catching up on a show. It's not a staple in our home, but I certainly don't think there is any harm in letting little ones watch TV, something I caught some criticism for way back when this topic was brought up on this board.

DD loves Disney Junior and PBS. She'll watch for a little in the morning, long enough for me to have a cup of coffee. I'm someone who has to have the tv on for background noise so it is on most of the day. Luckily she doesn't pay attention to it if it's not a cartoon.

  • We'll only use Baby Einstein as a distraction if we really need to get something done and she refuses to play on her own, it's very rare because she keeps herself occupied very well. Otherwise, when we are home TV is typically on as background noise but she never pays attention.

  • While my LO eats breakfast I turn on Baby Einstein.  I find it on youtube on my laptop and just stick my lap top on the kitchen table.  He loves it and it gives me time to start drinking my coffee and eat breakfast myself.  I also do this when I need to prepare dinner.  So I would say maybe he watches 45min to 1 hour total per day of Baby Einstein.

  • Lo loves TV, he loves baby signing time and little pim which are DVDs we bought him. We just got Netflix so I've put on other stuff but none hold his interest like those two.
He watches quite a bit but he has been great at signing and we've been learning Chinese together from little pim. I feel that he does understand the Chinese as I can sign and speak in Chinese and he will sign back just like if I was signing and speaking English. I know our pediatrician says no TV until 2, but since I didn't know Chinese or sign language before we started it would have been hard for me to teach him either so for me the risk is worth the reward.
  • My situation sounds just like yours.  She's actually more willing to play on her own (good independence building) if the TV is on.  We often sit on the floor with her and play while she watches TV.

I also tend to use it when I want her to try new foods.  If she's watching Thomas the Tank Engine, she's not paying as much attention to what she's eating and will put just about anything in her mouth!  Works like a charm :).

She'll watch Disney Jr a few times throughout the day.  Usually in the morning for about 20 minutes or so so that I can have coffee and vacuum, sometimes in the afternoon before going down for her nap while she drinks some milk, and then in the evening before going to bed.  She won't sit for more than 15 or 20 minutes (oftentimes less), however, before she loses interest. I would say that total, she probably watches about 1 hour or so of TV a day.

She's a big fan of Disney Jr, and that's pretty much all we play.  Her favorites are Sofia the First, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Little Einsteins.  She will also like Doc McStuffins and The Hive.  It's on a different times, so it's not always the same show.

I do have the TV on many days watching the news (I'm a news junkie), but we go outside a lot, play in her room, go to the mall, etc, so she's not always in front of the TV.
