BFing questions

Hey ladies!  BFing normally goes really well during the day, but I am concerned we are not getting enough at night, and ultimately, missing out on some longer stretches of sleep at night (we go mostly 3 to 3.5 hours now at 1 month).  I realize my LO will eat as much as she wants and she is done, she will stop.  At night, I normally start on the first side, which usually takes about 8 or 9 minutes, but when it comes to going over to the other side, she doesn't want anything to do with it.  She pushes me away, grunts, etc.  so I take a break, undress her, turn on a light , anything to wake her up.  I guess I'm mostly worried about leaving the other side full (which I realize I can pump that milk) but I think she still wants to eat.  Eventually, she will latch on.

Anyone else go through this?

I really just let LO dictate how long and whether she wants to eat on both sides. Usually when she unlatches I try to relatch her once. Then if she comes off again, I give her a chance to burp and offer the other side, also relatching her once on that side. I minimize stimlation at night, my goal is more to dream feed, so she is getting the milk but also learning to sleep at night. If she does not take the second side, I don't worry about it I just offer that side first at the next feeding.

Hey I had the same thing and still do sometimes. She would feed for only 5 mins every 2 hours. I was told to work on getting a really good latch so that it is easier for her and she stays on long enough to get the hind milk. I was also told she should single side feed until empty, do breast compressions when she slows down. Then you can change her etc. then offer the other boob but don't force it. If she empties one boob she will get the fatty hind milk and that should fill her up longer. So far we are having some luck with this, though she has yet to do a three hour stretch during the day, so you might be better off than me. GL

Yep this is what we do too. On the rare occasion that she does take the other side I find that her poos turn green from the extra foremilk.

I normally just do one breast at a time (like PP) because LO was getting green poop.  Letting her finish one side first allows her to get the hind milk and helps cut down on the green poop.

Sometimes in the morning one (or both) sides will be a bit engorged, but my LO will normally eat a lot in the morning so that takes care of the engorgement for me.

My baby only eats one side at a time. I am engorged in the morning but sometimes will feed two feedings in a row from the super engorged size and then it goes away.

My LO only eats on one side. If I try to switch sides he just stops and I know that he did not eat enough to be full. If I am to engorged on the other side I will pump. I am only ever really engorged in the mornings.

I feel it ox better for him to get his fill from the one side then to switch just to relieve some pressure and he get enough.

I am in my second LO and have never fed on both sides in a single feeding. There is no reason to give baby extra stimulation at night. Your baby will sleep longer when he or she is ready. It has nothing to do with tanking them up with milk. Your body will adjust to the nighttime schedule. If you feel horribly engorged, then pump. However, by doing so you are signaling your body that it needs more milk.
