email my boss..

I am a ballet teacher and will be starting back in the Fall. I will not see my boss all SUmmer and I will def have a belly the next time she sees me. Oh did I mention I haven't told yet?? Yeah, completely chickened out any opportunity I had! I feel I should tell her before I go away for the Summer?! Can I email her or is that just unheard of. Why am I so scared?!

Re: email my boss..

  • This is my opinion only and I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me but I think emailin something like that is wrong unless you're on different sides of the country. It hours be done face to face. Are you worried you won't hve a job to go back to? Is your boss nice?

  • Are you afraid that she might think you are unable to teach or something? I am a dance instructor and told the director immediately, because last time I ended up telling her because I had to be out for 4 days for my miscarriage. But I digress. I'm trying to understand what exactly is making you nervous. Is this your full time job, or something on the side?

Anyway, I'd say the e-mail thing depends on what your relationship with her is like. Since I don't know, I can't really make a call on that. More info?

  • I think that you could email her with the news since you will not see her for several months.  I would also tell her earlier than the "norm" if you plan on taking an extended maternity leave because that may/will take extra planning especially if you are responsible for teaching and/or creating any choreography for a spring show.  It would be horrible to wait until the last moment and have it effect your students.

  • This is my full time job and my workload is pretty full. I guess I'm worried she will say it's not worth coming back in the Fall. I was a prof ballet dancer and retired this past year so I have't been at this job very long. My boss is nice, and a ballet studio has to be family oriented right? I guess I just need a boost from you ladies! This is my first time doing all of this!

  • I would try to set up a time to meet with her in person to let her know. If that's not possible, I think a phone call is better than email. I was nervous to tell my boss as well, but I did this past week and it went great.

I agree with this. I think it very important that you tell her in person. I felt the same exact way with my boss, since I would be out during the most important time of the year for my job. Everything went very well, definetly way better then expected.
