Gender Test

My SO and I have been crazy curious on what the sex of the baby is. Last night he decides he can't wait the extra 5 days till our next apt and buys one of those gender tests you find in Walgreens. According to the test it's a boy. I am obviously not convinced they work but am curious if anyone else has tried them?

Re: Gender Test

  • Well, there's a 50% chance it's right... lol.

    Really though, I have never heard good things about that test.  It's just a novelty item.

  • Loading the player...
  • Even the amazon review has 2.5/5 stars...

    OP, the test has 50% chance of being right...

    I'm surprised a man actually went out and bought one. Most men I've talked to think those tests are a waste of time and money. It's the women who tend to not be patient and go out and waste money of this kind of junk.

    If they worked, no one would need ultrasounds to find out the sex.I think you wasted your money.nbsp;

    The ultrasound where you find out the sex is not given for the purpose of finding out the sex. Its a medical scan intended to verify the baby is developing normally, has all its limbs and extremities in proper proportion, has a four chambered heart and normal lungs and a normal looking brain, that it has a kidney and a liver and a ribcage. People don't get "ultrasounds to find out the sex"

    Very few people go and get an early elective US to find the sex.

    You should tell that to my BMB every day there are multiple people who got an elective ultrasound to find out the sex.

    Here is your OP.  It in no way whatsoever sounds like it was purchased "just for fun".  According to below your DH had intent and bought it because he was impatient - definitely doesn't sound like he did it was just for fun!

  • I did one just for fun at 11 weeks since I knew I'd be waiting atleast 6 more weeks and it actually was fun.  You can get them online for $20.  I've known personally 5 other people who did it and they were correct with each.  Unfortunately mine was incorrect.  The company brags an 80% correct status and I do think it still holds clout.  Go for it if you want to take the test.  I figure I'm only going to be pregnant once so I wanted to do things that I thought would be fun.  Also where I live elective ultrasounds are very common - Houston.  My fetal scan got pushed back two weeks so I ended up getting one and I soooo don't regret it.  The 3d was Amazing to see him sucking his thumb and moving around.  These are all personal choices and both were for my benefit and I really don't regret either.  We are only in control if so much during pregnancy.

  • It's a waste! I took the gender test when I was pregnant with my first and it clearly turned green which meant boy and guess what, I had a girl ; to help me get through the waiting process I am pregnant with my third and find out a week from Thursday what I am having I look up symptoms you get myth or not with a boy or girl and see what other pregnant women are saying their symptoms are whether they do or don't know the sex of baby yet and that at the least helps get me by until I find out ;
  • I have gotten them both pregnancies now. Last time I took one and it was right and it was a boy. This time I took one and was sure it would say boy again but it said girl so we will see in August if it was right again. The thing about the test that is controversial is that they can't sell them in certain countries because the family could abort due to having an undesired sex of the baby and finding out so soon.  I wouldn't swear by it yet either but I wouldn't write it off as nonsense because it isn't well heard of. That being said, the Chinese gender chart was right for me last time and says boy this time too, so I am interested to see which one is right. : )

    They each have a 50% chance of being right...

    Regarding the bolded, you are right that in specific countries early sex determination is illegal, but the test you are referring to has NO EVIDENCE OF BEING CLINICALLY RELEVANT OR CORRECT.  Great that it worked for you the first time, but that doesn't mean that there is any validity to the test at all...  There was a 50% chance that it would be correct... Those aren't terrible odds.  It's not like there were a million different options and it was correct.

    I thought it actually says "for entertainment purposes only" somewhere on the box?

  • I hate to admit it but I got one at 10 weeks, and my result came out very clearly and distinctly that I was having a boy. At the ultrasound she was 100% girl. Those things are just not accurate at all. And they do have a 50/50 chance of being right..flip a coin

  • If its just for fun I don't see the harm. Ok so she and her DH spent 20 differently then you or I would but I'm sure we all spend money different as different things are important to us. If it is correct good for you but I wouldn't go telling your friends and family to start buying.

    Exactly. How is LITERALLY p!ssing away $40 "fun"? God, I wish I'd been the evil genius to come up with this scam of a test. I'd make millions off stupid, uninformed people.

    Um, people DO get ultrasounds to find out the sex. And please don't turn this into a semantic argument.  No one would even begin to suggest that the anatomy scan's main purpose is to look for a penis or not.  Of course the main objective is determining the health of the baby.  When she said "no one would need ultrasounds to find out the sex" she meant that if the test actually worked, an u/s wouldn't be required if you wanted to find out.

    I'm about as snarky as they get, but jeez, that was just finding something to pick apart.

    Why is it ppl get so mean on here about someone's question about a gender test? She asked for opinions about accuracy to see if they did work for anyone at all, not to read sarcastic answers on here.

    That's the point.  It's impossible for them to "work".  It's got a 50/50 shot of guessing it correctly, but it CANNOT work because there is nothing in the mother's urine that tells the sex of the fetus.  If I say "girl" and you have a girl, that doesn't mean I'm psychic or have some way of telling you...it means I guessed.  These tests don't have an accuracy rate because it's a scam.

    Also, as to why people get snarky, women who are procreating should be smarter than this.  They should do just a tiny bit of research, where they would find out there's nothing in the mother's urine to indicate the sex of the baby.  Thus, it would follow, no one would waste, literally WASTE, $40 on these moronic tests.

  • I'm sorry if my post offended anyone. Silly me thought I had a right to blow MY money anyway I wanted. I'm sure there are many of you out there with spending habits I wouldn't agree with like drinking at a bar, gambling or maybe even wasting $5 on a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Either way it's not my money and NONE of my business. I would appreciate it if next time you all could keep your negative comments to yourselves.

    Then don't post on a public forum.  YOU put it out there that you'd blown your money on a scientifically bogus test, and then you complain when people call you out on it?
