WWYD: Vegetables

We've been giving G table food for about two weeks now exclusively...no purees at all.

He won't eat vegetables. He ate them just fine when they were pureed, but he won't touch one whole, cut up, seasoned, whatever.

SO wants to start giving him purees again because he doesn't want the not vegetable eating to become a habit [I hardly eat vegetables...maybe once a week].

At this point, I think we should just keep trying. But, SO is convinced he's lacking nutrients without them.

WDYT? WWYD?

Re: WWYD: Vegetables

  • Keep offering. Try putting a little shredded cheese on top maybe. If M seems unsure about a food, I hand feed it to her first to show her it's ok and then she's usually fine. Veggies are super important so keep trying.

Also, YOU need to eat your veggies, too!

Are you eating veggies while he is? DD will skip right over the veggies if there is other stuff on her tray or if I'm eating something else she'll whine until I share. Even though they're the exact same she often prefers stuff off of my plate so maybe you could try sharing some of your veggies. I've also only offered veggies until she eats some, then I bring out the rest of the meal.

Have you transitioned G to WCM yet? I can't remember. But the lacking nutrients thing isn't an issue if he's still getting BM or formula. Have you tried different textured pur?es? For instance, I baked a sweet potato (can be microwaved too) and mashed it up by hand, so it was still kind of pur?ed, but just a thicker texture. Yesterday I steamed some carrots that were cut really small. She had fun picking them up and shoving them in her mouth.

We've been supplementing with WCM, but I still pump enough to where he only gets about 3oz of WCM a day.

I haven't tried mashing it up so it's a little thicker, I'll have SO try that today! We roasted some baby carrots and he looked at me like, "WUT?!"

  • Maybe this is part of that wonder week thing, and not pickiness at all?

  • Keep offering and perhaps try new ones too to see if there are any he really likes and you like that you haven't tried before.

  • What veggies have you tried?  I honestly still do a little bit of homemade pur?es (so still kind of chunky) to get most veggies in.  I made a beef stew, chicken soup, etc, and just load them with veggies.  Does he like beans?  My LO loves beans, so if I incorporate them in anything he goes to town.  I made "chopped" chili fr him the other day.  It took for-freakin-ever to chop the peppers and onions small, but he loved it.

For hand veggies he loves peas, zucchini, sweet potato.  I need to expand his hand veggies repertoire too.

and you need to eat your vegetables!!!

Keep offering and don't worry too much about it.

This. We feed DD what we eat, so the meat usually needs to cool. We just give her the vegetable first while that's cooling. DD is a food monster though andeats pretty much anything.

  • Can I ask why you would stop certain purees then? We do a mixture of purees and table food with our LO. I don't understand the need to rush him into table foods.
  • Howell likes anything stick shaped so asparagus, green beans, stamed carrots, broccoli spears and that kind of thing. He loves spinach pies [even the frozen kind from Trader Joes], which have enough feta and other things in them. Also, I make pesto and add a couple handfuls of spinach in with the other things and he loves that on pasta. Actually, pasta and sauteed veggies with butter and cheese is a great way to feed vegetables. If they're chopped small enough, they will cling to the noodles and he can get used to them.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Sometimes Nolan eats better if he takes the food out of my hand or I put it in his mouth.
  • Why don't you sneak the veggies in for the time being by throwing them in with some pancakes or meatballs? That's what I'm doing and he really likes them and I know it's still good for him.  Carrots in a turkey and mashed potato meatball, broccoli, turkey and cheese in another, and today I'm making Italian style and hiding some spinach in it.  It doesn't have to be in puree form or straight up veggie form to count :)

I agree with poppy. Give it a little longer. Would you be against offering veggies pureed but chunkier texture? Maybe offering half BLW and half purred for the veggies only? Ethan's funny about veggies also however he will eat everything else in chunks......
