Nemo and her hips

Among the various other things found at birth (heart murmur, blocked tear duct, Mongolian spot, jaundice, stork bite, mini period, etc... - seriously), they found a hip click that was later confirmed by two pedi's. She was breech until 2 weeks before we delivered and we have a family history of hip issues.

Anyway, instead of finding just the L hip was displaced, turns out both are. We have an ortho appt on Wed, but both the radiologist and pedi think that she'll need a brace. I guess its a good thing that I only brought her dresses.

ETA: does anyone have experience with this? How long were they in a brace for? TIA

Aw poor thing! At least they found it early on and get it corrected! Apparently my LO has a heart murmur as well. The pedi mentioned in the hospital that the nurses had heard it but he didn't. Then at our first appt with him, he said he did hear it then. He didn't seem concerned and said it sounds innocent, but it still makes me worry. I pulled out my stethoscope and listened, but I couldn't hear it. Also the way she was sitting in utero, her right foot tends to turn sharply outward. Pedi says with some gentle massage hopefully it can be turned back in, or else he will refer us to a specialist!

Nemo's is innocent. We went last week to the cardiologist who did an echo in house. I heard the murmur myself and was surprised that with that sound, it's only innocent. DS was born with a list of issues too, so I like to think they both like to keep my PEDs nursing skills sharp.

Aww mama, sorry about all you're going through.

We just found out yesterday at the ortho that Amelia has hip dysplasia in her left joint and has to wear the pavlik harness for three months; all day, every day. I cried like a baby! But I'm feeling better about it today. It'll be an adjustment for all of us; no cloth diapering, swaddling will be tough if not impossible, no cute baby clothes [they can only wear a onesie under the harness so that they can be changed in it]. But thats all okay, because her health is what matters. I'm sure we'll be pros in no time.

You guys will manage, too. I'll be thinking of you and baby girl and keeping my fingers crossed that she gets healthy real quick!

  • Poor baby! I must have missed your birth story because I didn't know about the other stuff :( I don't have any experience with that.

  • OP - I am sorry to hear about your LO. Hopefully since they caught it early it will end up being easily fixed. GL to you and Skio.

Oh man that sucks. I'm glad I didn't buy too too much for CDing. We have enough to get started. Why is it onesie only? I was thinking dresses would be okay because it leaves the bottom clear. Naomi has only worn pants once, aside from PJs, because on totally dressing her like a doll. I'll be devastated if I can do that anymore. Obviously I want her healthy, but I love her in her cute sundresses.  Will the harness fit into a sleep sack? We have a Swaddle Sleep Sack that she loves.

  • Also Skio, who did you yous go to? We're seeing Dr. Debello in White Plains but he makes some appts near my house. We really need to get together now and trade experiences.

I'll try to answer everything! We are seeing Dr. Mann in Yorktown Heights and were referred there by our pedi.

You will probably be able to put sundresses on over the harness. But you still want a onesie underneath the harness as we're already having some chafing issues. It needs to be a onesie so that it can just be unbuttoned for diaper changes and rebuttoned without disturbing the harness. A dress under the harness wouldn't work because we were given pretty strict instructions not to remove the harness at all, except for a bath every 2 to 3 days. I bet it sounds super confusing but you'll see what I mean when they put the harness on.

As far as CDing, I realized that PFs and covers are definitely out. We have some newborn pockets that miiiight work, but I'll have to try one on and see. At least I'll be able to use the OS stash later on!

And swaddling; the swaddleme swaddle won't work. Talk to your doc, but I was told nothing that will squeeze the knees inward; they need to be splayed out as much as possible. Even time in the RnP, swing and car seat need to be limited because the hips don't spread like they should in those. A halo sleep sack with the swaddle might work because the bottoms are much wider than on a swaddleme and might allow for the hips to spread enough. We're going to try one tonight.

We should definitely plan to meet up on a couple weeks. It would be nice to be able to swap stories. :]

  • Thanks. Guiltily, I feel better knowing that she can still look cute wearing dresses over it. Some might not fit, but that gives me an excuse to go out and buy more ;)

  • I know the post is about your daughter's hip, but what has been done about her heart murmur? They found one on lilliana today and I'm nervous. Are your doctors waiting it out?

Before we left the hospital, they did a chest ray, EKG, blood pressures on all four limbs, and checked her oxygenation a few times. We had to see our pedi within 24 hours, so we saw them on a Sunday. Within a week we saw a peds cardiologist who did an echocardiogram right then and there. There wasn't any valve problem at all, just blood turbulence as it goes through the heart (called an innocent heart murmur because there's nothing wrong).

Can you request a referral? I'm not a fan of waiting it out before you even see how bad the issue is.

The cardiologist said 3 weeks shed see her, but told me she has a hole where a flap is supposed to be and I freaked out. She told me to come in next week and she felt like it would fix itself, but I can't help but worry. I'm happy your little ones murmur is straightened out. Hang in there.

The halo sleep sack worked! A little adjusting this and that and we were able to swaddle her arms and keep her legs properly splayed.

Not that it lasted...she had a tough night and wouldn't settle for anything, ugh. But it's still good to know for future nights.
