Trouble TTC

SA IUI vs IVF

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some opinions... My siggy is not working.. But I will try to explain.

dh and I have been ttc since Jan 2011.  Finally saw an re in feb, and was diagnosed with low sperm count (.8), RE said nothing we could do, she said you don't have to birth a child to be a parent... Did not even give the option of IVF.  Needless to say I have not seen her since!

We went and saw a urologist, DH was diagnosed with vertiolce, but his second test (2 months later) came back at 8.8, which is much better.. Still not normal, but we'll take it.

We now have a new RE and I absolutely love her! She said that everything looks great with me and she said that she this that we have a shot with IUI with the last SA, but she wanted another one done.

Just got the results from test number 3 (2 months later) and the SA has dropped to 4.4... I have to do one more cd3 around again for insurance purposes, and then I have my infectious disease to do then also... After that test she said we will come up with a plan... She was a bit disappointed that DH SA came back lower, but did not indicate what she thought would happen going forward...

Can anyone anticipate if they will say IVF or IUI?

I really appreciate any opinions, thoughts, or personal experiences you can share.

Re: SA IUI vs IVF

  • We don't have MFI, so unfortunately I have no advice about that, but I can tell you that my RE will not do an IUI w/out a post-wash count of at least 5 million.  I think generally, if MFI is an issue, IVF would be the better option, potentially w/ICSI.  If you have 4.4 million motile and the morphology and everything else is good, that IVF should be an option for you, but maybe I am not understanding your number correctly. Hopefully someone with MFI can pipe in.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully you can come up with a good plan and you will be successful!

My husband had low numbers and we did 5 rounds of IUI.  His numbers were average of 5 - 10 million although one month he did get 25 million.  The 5th IUI we did though, he only had 1 million... and that was the IUI that worked.  When we learned he only had 1 million the RE's nurse didn't want to go through with the IUI but since I had already spent that cycle on bravelle and femara and had already triggered, I insisted I didn't care that we had a snowballs chance in hell, put the swimmers in me anyhow.  I'm relieved my case worked but if I had to do it all over again, I don't know if I wouldn't just jump right to IVF.  It's all a big gamble, but IVF usually offers more success with MFI issues.  I guess I would say if your insurance covers the IUI's, why not give them a shot?  If you are all OOP, I'd ask the doctor about success rates of IUI vs IVF with male factors.  I wish you all the best luck in the world, going through these choices is never easy.
