Working Moms

New to the board. Who watches your kid/kids?

I'm considering getting a job soon. My oldest starts school in August so that just leaves me with my 17 month old. Ideally I would like to get a job at a daycare and take him with me. Or maybe even get a part time job and only work on DH's days off IF someone would work with me on that (he has a wacky schedule) I don't have family who can watch him because they all work. I'm not counting on getting a high paying job as I have no degree in anything. I'll likely be put in a minimum wage job so I couldn't exactly afford daycare. I just need some helpful ideas if anyone has any. TIA!

Re: New to the board. Who watches your kid/kids?

  • My sister used to do a nanny share with another family. She brought her kid to their house and the rate must have been reasonable because both she and her husband were students at the time.

Hopefully someone else has some ideas. I hate that we don't have quality, affordable daycare options.

  • From my experience day care workers can get a discount for their child, but they are generally not free, which makes working an already low paying job less appealing.  Also daycares are open long hours and only closed on major holidays, do you have plans for your other kids when they are out of school?

Would caring for one or two kids in your home be a possibility?

I'm not sure if I could do that or not at this point. It is something to think about though. DH works evenings and doesn't get home til 2 am so he sleeps late but maybe if the right person needed help and didn't need help too early I could work something out. It is a good idea. Thanks.

  • Could you provide after school care for one or two kids in the same class as your oldest? That way they won't arrive until later in the day when your DH has had time to sleep. You could offer a snack and an activity until their parents can get them after work. It wouldn't be tons of money but a little something and no childcare required.

what about working the lunch shift at a local restaurant? Your dh could probably sleep in a bit and you would be home before he leave for work?

I like this idea, especially if you already know a few working moms with kids in the same class.  I'd love to send DD home with a friend to play and pay for it, of course.  Parents Day Out programs at churches tend to be affordable but might only be for 5 hours per day a couple of days a week, not much time for you to work.  If I were you I'd probably wait tables a couple of nights a week.

  • I currently only work part time (It was supposed to stay that way, but we can't afford it) So right now, my mil watches my daughter on Fridays. My husband watches our daughter on Saturdays. Starting In July when I go back full time My mom will watch her one day and a co-workers daughter will watch her 1-2 days a week.
