developmental hip dysplasia?

Hey there, I'm not a big poster but I felt the need today....

My baby girl is 4 weeks old as of yesterday and we just rec'd a diagnosis from our pediatrician that she has bilateral hip dysplasia.  Just wondering if there's anyone out there with any experience with this?  Thanks -

    We have an ultrasound next week for this. It's good that you caught it early. It is totally treatable.i think my ped said she might have to wear a brace for a while and that it should be better by the time she needs to crawl. That's why it's lucky that you caught it early. GL I'm sure your LO will be ok

    I'm mostly a lurker too, but I have direct experience with this.  My DD is 5 weeks and has been in the Pavlik Harness for 2 weeks now.  We see an Orthopedic Specialist every week to make adjustments to the harness and check the progress of the hip stabilizing in the socket.  So far she's been doing great.  Believe me when I say that watching your child go into the harness for the first time is heartbreaking, but I swear it's worse on the mom then it is on your baby.  My DD  thought the Dr. was putting clothes on her.  She is in the harness 24/7 so the down side is no baths for now.  The harness is pretty inconvenient at first, but with a few diaper changes you will become a pro.  My Dr. said that she may have to be in the harness as long as 12 weeks.  It does attract a lot of attention, but the long term effects of not treating it are way worse than your baby having to wear a harness at a time in their life they won't even remember.  And, as previous poster stated, it's awesome they have caught it this early.  Another cool fact?  Larry The Cable Guy is the spokes person for Hip Dysplasia. =) Hope this helps and best of luck with your LO!

    my daughter had this and it was discovered at birth. They put her in the harness during our hospital stay and it is heartbreaking at first. She was in it for 12 weeks total. The only thing she could wear was the long nightgowns with the elastic bottoms. So all those cute nb, 3m and some 6m clothes she couldn't wear. Its been a while, so I don't remember all the details, but we had to go have x-rays and ultrasounds probably 3-4 times in that 12 wks. Then we had to follow up at maybe 6 months, 1 yr, & 3yrs.  The pedi orthopedic dr. said to follow up every 3 years until she's 12 to make sure the hip develops well during puberty. 

    As far as her development, being in the harness did delay her rolling over, crawling, etc. b/c she had no use of her legs/hips for the first 3 months. She had a PT to help her work with all that she she caught up.

    We just had an US to check for this and LO came back fine. But SIL had this when she was a baby and like others have said she wore a brace for a couple of weeks and then she was fine. Knowing her now I wouldof had no idea she had it

    Our LO was diagnosed with this a month ago. She's been wearing the Pavlik harness and like others said it's much harder on mom than on the baby she doesn't really notice it.
    We went back to ortho surgeon on Thursday and her hips have already moved back into place and she is now being weaned off of it. 6 hours a day off for first week.. 12 hours a day off the second week etc...I was so happy when doctor said she was already being weaned off of it after 3 and a half weeks that I hugged him!! When we first took it off Harper she actually looked a little scared in sure it was because she was so used to it.
    It's so lucky they caught it so early for your little one!!
