September 2013 Moms

She's like a completely different dog.

We have an almost 7 year old long hair chihuahua.  She has been our only baby for 4 years now.  We adopted her from the shelter.   She has always had the best temperment.  Not your typical, yapping, snipping, I only like 1 human and no animals kind of dog.  She was basically house broke, and we fwere able to get her to be the best in door dog ever.  We have never had ANY problems with her.  Until I found out I was pregnant.   She started messing in the house, eating tissue out of the garbage cans, dragging socks under the bed, she wouldn't sleep with me anymore...I was about to my wits end. Then it all stopped. Just like that.

Now, anytime I am in the recliner, laying on the couch, or in bed, she is glued to my side or my belly.  If DH comes home and tried to kiss my belly, or touch it in anyway, she jumps in front of him.  She has not been aggressive at all, she just puts herself in between him and my belly.  He has to set her on the floor to get some baby time.  Its like over night she realized, well, this thing os going to come no matter how I act and I am tired of getting spanked, so...I'll deal with it.

  • Glad to hear that she is behaving better these days. However, don't be surprised if she regresses again for a few weeks when LO is brought home. Some dogs just don't handle change well, especially if they are used to getting 100% of your attention.

I do have to say though I'm side eyeing you for spanking your dog. She's a dog and not capable of understanding why you are hitting her. That alone can contribute to her bad behavior.

  • I think using the word spank may have sounded harsh.  We "swat" I guess you can say. I can't fathom sticking her nose in a mess like the vet suggested, so we swat her behind.

I can't believe your vet would have suggested sticking her nose in her mess. Typically, that would just tell her that's where she's supposed to go and reinforce it as a "good" spot to go. I don't think dogs understand what you're doing if you put their nose in their own poo.

  • I think dogs are smarter than people give them credit for. If our chihuahua makes a mess in the house, we know about it before we find it... She has some serious shame about it. And yeah, we swat her too...

  • Just FYI to the swatters: the research shows, unequivocally, that aggression begets aggression. For all animals, including humans. Introducing another noxious stimulus that's not physically aggressive, like a noise or a water squirter, will work better for you!

  • Dogs definitely know what they are getting in trouble if you take them to what they have done and tell them off! Our dog is the cutest thing, if he has torn something up that he knows he's not allowed to, he slinkers around and acts super guilty until we find what he has done, then he knows its trouble time!! Dogs are actually very intelligent!!!

When it comes to accidents, I think t depends on the dog. One of my dogs will look guilty each time and you wonder what he did and go search for it. The other dog is clueless, even if you yell at her.

I was told that you have to catch them in the act and say bad dog or no! immediately in order for them to understand.

    But we digress!

Glad she's behaving better! I feel like my dog (the duh one) just realized I was pregnant like two days ago. Now, she's crying for me when I get home, following me around...

  • I have a 6yo long haired chihuahua! He is our only little guy at home... for now... Gus is his name. He didn't change his temperament until recently, but never negatively. He is now a total mamas boy and glued to my side.

You should update this post with a pic of your baby.
