December 2013 Moms

Any moms out there who are in the restaurant business?

How are you guys dealing with the smells and all the restrictions? I work in a high volume kitchen for Intel. I work the morning rush and lunch rush plus prep on top of everything else. Some days I feel like im about to pass out and keel over, while in reality you cant take 5 in the kitchen. We had a girl pregnant recently and she milked everything to the point everyone wanted to have her gone permently(granted she was lazy before her pregnancy.) I personally work very hard and I don't want to be labeled like the girl before me. Everyone keeps telling me to take it easy and checks on me because they know im a good worker and do more than is expected of me. Hopefully soon I'll be moved to front house and go on light duty. How did you other moms in the industrial kitchens handle the stress and heavy loads?

  • Unfortunately I don't have any experience in any of this except for the smells. I know when I was doing clinicals for nursing school, I learned to rub just a little Vaseline or a little light scented lotion right on the inside of my nose, it blocked alot of the smells. Not sure if it will help you, but just an option I guess!

  • I work in a fast paced pizza place as a Supervisor so I know where you are coming from.   I am 14 weeks pregnant so I have thankfully moved past the every smell makes me want to hurl.  It was pretty bad at the beginning.  I ocassionaly still get nausea when having to make tuna salad or  when we are cooking meatballs.  I talked to my boss and thankfully they understood.  I would just go do other prep work.  But I know how you feel as far as being labeled.  I, too am a hard worker and always went above and beyond at my job. I would work extra shifts if someone was sick or stay late if need be.  I had to call out 2 days bc of extreme morning sickness and my boss got worried and thought I was going to quit.  I reassured her I wasn't.  I did though have to get a doctors note to be able to eat a quick snack every 2 hours to keep the nausea to a minimum bc my boss told me to limit my snacking.  Well either I'm in the bathroom throwing up bc I have an empty stomach or I'm in the kitchen doing my job.  Take your pick.  It was stressful at the beginning bc I thought I was going to get fired or be talked about behind my back and my coworkers would think I was trying to get special treatment.  I just take it day by day.
  • Glad to hear from other women in the kitchen and what they have encountered so far. I was kinda happy the other day my executive told me he appreciates all my hard work and effort even with my pregnancy. He knows I put myself out there and do my best to be an amazing employee and provide best customer service. My customers were sad they dont get to eat my amazing breakfast anymore. I laughed when one of them suggested I train the guys on the line how to cook my foods so they can get a fix until I go back to my breakfast station. Good to have words of encouragement from my customers and my boss, makes me less stressed out.
