Position of the baby

Is there any way to tell the position of the baby based on where you feel movement?  I asked my Dr last week if she could tell the position of the baby and she just said based on the shape of my belly it seems like she is head down, but that was just a guess.  I've been feeling the most movement in the past few days on the right side and in my lower abs.  Any guesses on what the baby's position is based on that?  Thanks!

Re: Position of the baby

  • Nope, no idea.

My ob actually took the time to feel my belly when I asked to tell me where his head, back, legs, etc are when we asked. Then again, he's pretty awesome and very thorough.

  • I feel baby *everywhere*. But doc says she's head down, so we're going with that. I also read in one of my books that you can tell where LO's back is by if your stomach is smooth and hard. If you stomach feels/looks a little less tightened and a little softer, then LO's back is facing your spine and their hands and feet are front facing.

Mine too! I would never be able to guess on my own. I love my doctor, he even took the time to show my husband and I around LD after our appointment!

  • Same here, my OB only gives a guess even after feeling around. Luckily I had an ultrasound last week that confirmed head down.

  • I can tell baby is head down because I feel her hiccups down low.

  • You can try belly mapping. We did the other day before our growth scan and were spot on with LO's position.

I agree. I can also feel her feet on my ribs. But they can switch around, for example I know she's head down now, but at our appt. on Tuesday she was transverse.

    This.

And you'd be surprised at how good your intuition is even if you don't fully map it.  For me, I know baby is head down because I feel his hiccups in my pelvis.  The big round thing up top is his butt the flatter part is his back and it matches up well with where I usually find his heartbeat with my doppler.  I feel smaller tickly movements in my pelvis/lower abs which are hands and then bigger movements up near the left upper abs which are feet/knees.

    It's fun to figure out!

Mine continues to stay breech and continuously kick what feels like my rectum...I've started nightly inversions hoping to help the baby flip!
  • I swear he has 10 arms and legs. He is all over the place. We actually got it on video last night and it looked like a scene out of alien. Super weird.

  • If I feel around I can sort of tell what is what. I can usually tell where his butt is. Based on his hiccups he is head down and off to the right but occasionally he moves over to the right.

  • Ditto the belly mapping off spinning babies. Once I read that, it all made perfect sense.

I'd also be a bit disturbed by a doctor that didn't know how to do Leopold's maneuvers to know the position of the baby. It's pretty much OB 101 level stuff. My doctor has no issue knowing the position by feel and the location of the heartbeat - it's more than "a guess".

  • when your dr is doing a belly check if they feel around they can tell if baby is head down. My mw felt dd head down on Wednesday and then at my Doppler yesterday she flipped sideways.

  • I guessed where baby boy was just by the feel of my belly and back at my last ultrasound, like 3 weeks ago or more the tech confirmed it and he was already head down and facing the back. His movements recently are one constant and two totally look alien like!
  • I found out this week LO is transverse which totally makes sense because I feel all the movement on my sides, like above each hipbone.  I'm pretty convinced he's been like that the whole time since I've always felt movement on the sides.  Not exactly scientific, though.
  • I'm convinced its an octopus. I feel it everywhere too.
  • My midwifes spend a while during each appt with their hands on my belly.

I know she's head down, sometimes to the left. And sometimes to left transverse. And all her hiccups I feel near my pubic none.

If she's left transverse, I feel feet kicks on my right. And a solid back on the left. If she's just turned a little to the left, I can feel a bigger hard lump above my belly button pretty much in the middle. She moves all the time though. But always head down.

    2nding spinning babies!

  • Mine were both transverse practically the whole pregnancy, but both moved to head down 2 weeks ago.

They move so much it is insane.  I could stare at my stomach all day.

  • Mine's posterior breech, sometime slightly transverse. I generally feel kicks down low, but also occasionally up high when he puts himself into frank breech. Lots of times he pokes his head out of the top of my stomach :)

My belly is also flat in front, which is apparently typical when they are posterior....

It's not that my OB doesn't know how to feel around to tell... it was just that it was still pretty early when I asked so she was just guessing based on the shape at that point and said that the position could still change later.
