disposable vs cloth?

Uuuhhh...so thinking about having to start pay for childcare is stressing me out and I'm trying to think of some ways to start saving money. We DO NOT have to pay for water at our current house, so I'm wondering if it would be a better deal to switch to cloth diapers??? Anyone out there use them? Do you really save money with them? I know there is a board so I'll look around there for advice too. TYIA

Re: disposable vs cloth?

  • Would your DCP accept cloth diapers? Most of the centers we looked at when I was pregnant with DS1 didn't (licensing or some such issue). If they would have accepted them, I would have definitely considered CDing, but it didn't seem very cost effective to only do them part time. If you are able to do them at home and DCP then I definitely think they're worth it, particularly if you plan on having more than 1 kid.

  • I love our cloth diapers! We used them with our first and are going to start using them again in a few days when our second one makes her debut. We really like hybrid diapers, like gdiapers and cocalo perfect bum. They both give you the option of using a cloth insert or disposable insert. Because you can use a disposable insert with them, some daycare places might be more willing to work with them and you. Also, by using both disposable and cloth inserts, you can choose how often you want to wash diapers and/or how much money you want to save/spend. Hope that helps! Best of luck!
  • Also, ask your daycare if they provide diapers. The one we will eventually use provides their own and its included in the weekly price. She said instead of keeping track of multiple kids diapers and the whole cloth vs disposable issue when there, everyone wears the same. I'm sure it's not the fancy sensitive swaddlers I use but it will be 8 hours a day I don't have to worry about it.
  • My son is only a week old, but I did the math and assuming that he's a normal pooper, we'll save about 70 dollars over the course of the first three months (I didn't go "all-out" on my stash).  That includes energy/water costs for washing.  Also, the cloth diapers - well the prefolds and covers we use, look a LOT swankier than the disposables!  Not that that should be the deciding factor of course!
  • We used cloth with our first and I bought a large stash of more premium cloth diapers and only used them part time because she goes to daycare in disposables and still saved money not even considering that baby #2 is using all of her old diapers so we have no cost for future kids. Plus she potty trained at 2 years old which significantly cut down the amount of time she would have been in disposables.

  • My DC will not accept them, but we still save money! As soon as I go get her I put her in cloth. She stays in cloth the rest of the evening and sometimes at night. We CD full time on the weekends. I also CD full-time while on maternity leave. It has saved us so much! GL with your decision.

  • Our future daycare accepts cloth so that's a plus. Hubby and I calculated that with twins over the course of 3 years we'll save at least $2000 by using cloth vs disposable.

  • Check your state laws for day cares and cloth diapers if the day care says it won't do cloth diapers. Many states require day cares to accommodate to babies who wear cloth. It may be as simple as getting a note from your pediatrician stating it's better for your LO to wear cloth vs disposables.

That being said, I think you most definitely will save money, ESP if you use the cloth with your next baby, if you plan on more children. The cloth diapering board can give you all kinds of info on savings and day care and cloth. GL!
