prenatal vitamins, nutrition, and protein

Which prenatal vitamin are you taking?? Is it over the counter (OTC) or a prescription (rx) from your MD??

I was on a rx vitamin but it is $100 a month (birth control is free with insurance, but have to pay full price for a prenatal vitamin!!!) Now I am taking a variety of rx samples from my OB but I am going to run out in the near future. I don't think that I am getting enough nutrients from OTC vitamins (my hair and nails don't grow as quickly on them)

Also, what are you doing to ensure that you are getting enough nutrients in  your diet??

I try and eat veggies and fruits at meals and snacks, but I still don't think I am getting enough. I have beets, apples, and spinach at home and I am going to use my juicer to help get nutrients condensed. But it takes a lot of veggies and I am exhausted these days. There must by an easier way..... which is why I am asking what you are doing.

Are you eating enough protein?? My OB said that I need 75-100 grams of protein a day! That is a lot!!!! Especially having an aversion to most meats most of the time. Luckily I can eat milk products (milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream :) any time.  But I still don't think I am getting enough. Are you getting enough protein??

Thanks for your input!! :)

Re: prenatal vitamins, nutrition, and protein

  • I am taking New Chapters Perfect Prenatals, an organic food derived vitamin. I also make green juice or smoothies daily, so I put a scoop of green plus protein powder in that to get an extra 50gs

  • I currently take Nexa Plus rx prenatals but starting next month I am switching to Rainbow Light OTC prenatals which my ob said was good. I will also take fish oil capsules daily because Rainbow Light does not have dha in it. As far as nutrition, I haven't been too focused on that because with the intense food aversions and nausea, my doc said just eat what I can. But now that I am starting to feel better, I signed up for Babyfit online to track my food intake and make sure I'm getting the right amount of calories and nutrients each day.

  • I'm taking a Rx because it's the only one that doesn't irritate my m/s... It's pricey though, even with just a copay... So I'm switching to an over the counter with DHA as soon as the nausea passes.

I struggle with getting enough protein because I'm not a big meat eater and I can't stand beans/lentils. I try to eat eggs, yogurt, protein waffles, etc. I think I would feel better if I could get more in, though.

  • I was taking the prenatal gummies which were fine but I've since switched to Vitamin Code's Raw Prenatal vitamins. I've also heard about the New Chapter ones mentioned in a previous post both that one and the Vitamin Code are supposed to be some of the best and most absorbed.
  • I just got the okay from my OB to switch to flinstones vitamins 2 times a day rather than prenatals. The prenatals were really hard on my stomach. They are OTC obviously.

I know when I haven't had enough protein because I start to feel light headed and get dizzy. I'm doing okay with fruits and veggies. Anything acidic leads to vomiting so I've had to stick to bananas and frozen peaches.  I also can't do a lot of dairy so I take a calcium supplement.

  • Prenatals: AOR prenatal + AOR vitaminD + Cytomatrix Calcium and Magnesium +Omega3 capsules

Nutrition: smoothies w/protein in the morning, juicing every couple of days, lots of fruits throughout the day and I try to have one big salad as a meal. I also eat small portions but more frequently.

Protein: I don't think I'm eating as much as I should (right now I have a meat aversion, but I can have cheese and diary)...

  • I don't eat eggs and have been having an aversion to meat for the last two weeks, but I do eat 2 Chobani/ day to help with protein.  They're about 14g each.  And at least 2 servings of skim milk at 8g each.  Some days I can stomach a protein bar(20-30g).  I'm hoping once nausea calms down I'll get more in, but for now it's what I can stomach.

  • I'm changing up my prenatal. I had one from my OB, but it makes me sick. I'm going to try a gummy prenatal my best friend recommended.

I'm not big on the protein right now, because it just doesn't sound good. But I've stepped up my water intake, and I try to eat at least one meal as a salad every day. I need to head to the grocery store to stock up on more fruit, too.

  • I've got and RX I believe they are called Prenaplus with my insurance they were only 10$ for a 90 day rx at walmart. when I had them filled at my grocery store pharmacy they were going to be 40$ so I'd recommend calling  a walmart pharmacy and seeing how much their generic brand rx is.

Also have you called and talked to your insurance company about it? sometimes it depends on how the rx is filed with one code is covered and with another you end up paying for it all.

If you worried about protein  I'd recommend a protein shake of some kind. I also us supertracker.usda.gov  Just to make sure i'm getting enough of everything else. When I want an evening snack I look and my chart and see if there's anything I was short on for the day. If I didn't get much dairy I'll grab a yogurt etc.

  • I'm just taking otc prenatals from Nature Made with DHA. The capsules are huge but not too bad to swallow. When these run out I'm switching back to the Target brand prenatals and will take a DHA supplement along with them. Personally, I think you're doing great with the amount of healthy things you're keeping down. Me, its whatever I can stomach at the moment. Congrats, you're doing great momma!

I took New Chapter Perfect Prenatals throughout my first pregnancy and the beginning of this one as well. Right now I'm taking Raindow Light Organics Prenatals. I like both and hey are both food based which is nice. I have a sensitive stomach but I've neve had either of them make me sick.

I discovered the best prenatal that's in powder form! It's called Premama. My OB says it's got all the vitamins and nutrients and iron, DHA...all the good stuff baby needs. I'm anemic so the iron is really important for me. I have to really watch how much iron I'm getting in the prenatal and through food. I make protein shakes and add the Premama to the shake. So much easier to take, and I now don't have to take the extra iron pill. Yay! :) The cost of a month supply is actually cheaper than the RX version and the iron pills. I think it's about $25 or $30. drinkpremama.com is the website, and on Amazon, too.
