Illinois Babies

Swedish Covenant Hospital

Anyone live in Chicago area and go to swedish covenant hospital to have their baby or for ob prenatal care during pregnancy? By midwife or ob dr? Advice and reviews would be appreciated.
Thanks.
I'm due between feb 8 to 11, 2014. This is my second baby. I'm looking for an all natural vaginal delivery this time, just like the last and No medications.

Re: Swedish Covenant Hospital

  • Yes! I delivered my 2nd son at Swedish with the midwife group and am planning on delivering 3rd there too. I really liked my experience at the hospital. I can't say if it had to do with the hospital or the midwife group. I did end up being induced with Pitocin because I developed ICP and that has a risk of stillbirth. But it really was a last resort. All other options were exhausted and even then my MW asked if I wanted to try Cervidil again or go with Pitocin. I was allowed to walk around freely and go to the bathroom and eat/drink even after being put on Pitocin. I was warned that once I got an epi that I would have to stay in bed though and also stop eating/drinking. I could go into the shower to help with labor pains but I couldn't deliver in there. I had to be on the bed for that. I was allowed to deliver in any position (even with an epi). I also really liked that my MW let me break my own bag of waters. She did not do it for me. She also let me nurse immediately after baby came out and cleaned the baby and did Apgar test as I nursed. She even waited a bit to cut the cord. This was a completely different experience than the one I had at Resurrection (where I had my 1st). Res is very old fashioned. You have to stay in bed, eat ice chips only and deliver flat on your back with feet in stirrups. Again, I don't know if the big difference here is the hospitals or OB vs. MW. The postpartum care at both hospitals were pretty much the same though. Both hospitals were filled with opinionated, pushy nurses that tried to get me to fill out the feeding spreadsheet and tried to scare me about SIDS and push formula on me. If you decide to go with the Swedish MW group, let me warn you now that prenatal visits at the main building (foster & california) can be a PITA. Their appt slots fill up really fast and they're usually running behind. You do a lot of waiting. I've had better luck with their Mayfair office and usually only wait about 5 min when I go there. Despite the wait, it is worth it to me.

  • My sister had a very horrible experience with the OB group at swedish and ended up going to Northwestern because she was fed up with them.  She thought she was having trouble conceiving so they had sent her for some very invasive tests that caused a ton of bleeding and when they checked on the source of the bleeding, it turned out that she was actually pregnant.  Luckily, she delivered a very healthy baby girl at NMH.

Also, for what it's worth, I know someone who works in the medical malpractice in the area who told me to never ever go to Swedish Covenant.  If in an ambulance, demand that they take you somewhere else.

I have heard of one person who had a great experience there, not including pp, but if I were you, I think it'd be worth it to go to Rush or Northwestern.

  • I haven't heard anything about delivering at the hospital but my SIL who is a nurse says that there is no NICU there. That could pose a problem and I would feel better in a hospital that has one. I'm delivering at Northshore Evanston hospital and so far my experience with them has been awesome. My friend actually recommended the hospital and OB-GYN that I go to and she had nothing bad to say.
