VBAC fears

Hello Ladies, I've been lurking for a while, have never posted but I hope maybe someone has some experience with this to offer . With my DD, I had pree and ended up with an emergency csection. After that I lost 3 back to back pregnancies, first at 17 weeks. This pregnancy has been great though, no issues at all, no gd or signs of pree. I changed everything, diet and exercise, to insure this one was is healthy. I wanted to attempt a vbac, rather then another cs I feel this may have contributed to my miscarriages but after having to look over the consent forms I'm a little afraid. There is a 12 chance of uterine rupture or other issues that could endanger my baby. I'm often still scared that I will not meet this guy and though the chances are low, I've already been in the rare catergories with the rpl. My question is has anyone out there had a vbac, what are your thoughts on it and wwyd?

Re: VBAC fears

  • I'm curious if you've scrutinized the consent for CS as closely? There are potential serious outcomes for major abdominal surgery, too, repeat or not.

Do your research and talk it over with your dr, in detail.

I was thinking this as well. There are major risks on both sides. Granted, I have never had a CS but I have seen my fair share of information.

  • The risks of a RCS are worse than those of a VBAC. I'll link you some studies when I get to my laptop.

  • The original cs I signed nothing, it was an emergency and I had already been in the hospital for 3 days at that point. I totally trusted my midwives when she said it was necessary. In hindsight I think I should have done things differently. Surprisingly I was not bit given a consent for the cs this time either, only to attempt the vbac. I will definitely look into repeat csection risks as well. I researched a lot during the miscarriages mostly into how that could cause the losses but I think I need to definitely focus on the risks to the baby. Thank you for the advice.
  • Thank you, I would really appreciate that
  • From what I have read, you have to look at the various factors to determine your odds of success with a VBAC.  Apparently, better odds include being under 40 and not having TOL stopped due to failure to progress.

In my case I fail both those tests, failing to progress on high doses of pitocin (after water broke), and DD's HR kept dropping when they did that.  Add to that I'm due less than 15 months after my last CS, and I am choosing RCS, but I'm sure I could attempt a VBAC if I pushed (no pun intended) for it.

I was just researching the topic yesterday found a couple of interesting links.  One was a little "quiz" to help you determine your odds of success, but I can't seem to find it again.  Here's the other one though:  https://www.aafp.org/afp/2007/1015/p1192.html

Good luck with whatever you choose.

  • I Really wish I could do a Vbac. But every OB, I have talked to have told me that I have to have RCS. I would just read as much as you can and talke with your OB about it.

  • I'm trying for a VBAC because the risks are lower and the recovery is generally easier. I would never choose a major abdominal surgery if it wasn't necessary. Thus far I'm still a candidate for VBAC, so hopefully it pans out. I should add that I had two vaginal deliveries before my CS, and knowing how different they were for me, I will fight for my VBAC until the bitter end.

  • I am also a VBAC candidate right now, I was induced due to High BP and then when my water broke his heart rate went crazy so emergency CS it was. Talk to your doctor and do as much research as you can, there is also a VBAC board here on the bump that can give you some more advice and encouragement. As PP have said there are serious risks to either option so its best to be as informed as possible about BOTH sides. GL!

  • I have several friends who have had successful VBACs. A lot of doctors don't like to do them for a variety of reasons, very few of which are due to legitimate risks to you/the baby.  If you have a doctor that will do it and supports your decision, I would say trust them and their experience to tell you whether you are a good candidate or not. Having a good doula/midwife would be very helpful in this situation as well, most of my friends who had a VBAC had both to advocate for them.

  • I am trying for a VBAC, too. With DS I was induced at 39w1d due to high BP and protein in my urine. I ended up with a c/s because DS was breech so I'm hoping to VBAC this time. At my 32-wk appt I had high BP and protein in my urine so it's looking like I'm heading towards pre-eclampsia so we'll see how that affects it. GL and I hope you get your VBAC!
