I'm not sure if it is "all natural" but we have been using some Burt's Bees stuff (that is a few years old, so I have no idea if they even have the same stuff, but maybe) that has lemongrass and other things like that. It's kind of oily and might stain your clothes, but I like it for direct skin. DH and I deet ourselves and then we rub the BB stuff on DD's exposed areas. We also tuck our shirts in and our pants in our socks. We use this on terrible mosquito-filled hikes with dd in a carrier, so the combo works pretty well and dd doesn't seem worse off than us. Picaridin has been well-reviewed, but I haven't tried it. I am seriously going to buy a mosquito net hat and just bought some lightweight long pants because the mosquitoes in MI are so bad this year, and even the deet doesn't stop them all. However, if you don't think the natural thing you choose works, I would either take refuge or use the deet, especially for wooded or tall grass hikes. You don't want ticks.
I live out in a very rural area so no city sprays and I have 13 acres of woods. I swear by basic Tree Tea Oil. I buy a bottle ($8 at Walmart) and mix it with water. If bugs are pretty bad, I fill up 3/4 of my small spray bottle with TTO & the rest with water. Otherwise I do half and half. You have to shake it each time you use it and replay every so often. Adults use it too and love it! Plus if you do get bit, dab a bit of TTO and it will make it go away. You don't smell, and you don't have to shower prior to going to bed. Also, we use Grandma's Lye Soap to bath/wash with during the summer. It takes away smells and it helps too (of course, don't use perform afterwards).
I bought CJs Butter Bug Spray. It was pretty good for black flies if I kept reapplying. I put deet on my feet, but didn't want it elsewhere because of LO. I sprayed her all over. She got 2 bites, I got 7, but they were super thick that weekend and I think I just didn't reapply enough. We put a bug net over her stroller or car seat if they are very bad. Mosquito season is just starting so I don't know how well it works for them.
The scent is a little strong, but the product is safe and it seems to work.
this is what we used on a camping trip last weekend. Bugs were really bad, but it seemed to work. Just very oily. You can buy it at babies r us or target.
Re: Recommend your favorite all natural bug spray - also posted on toddlers 12-24 months
I haven't tried this, yet, but my neighbors love it.
