Extra Car Seat for Travel

Has anyone purchased an extra car seat for travel? I feel really nervous about gate checking my car seat and I'm considering buying one of the inexpensive seats that are around 50. I'm not sure if this sounds crazy or not.

  • Doesn't sound crazy at all. Especially if checking it costs you $50 anyway.

  • You're actually not supposed to check it, so great idea to me!

  • Thanks. I'm starting to get nervous. We will ask for an extra seat if the plane is not full but since we didn't pay 400 to get her her own seat there are no guarantees that we won't have to gate check the seat.

  • We used a Cosco Scerena ($40) for my son when we traveled alone when he was 10 months old.  I actually just ordered it online to be delivered to my aunt who I was flying to visits house.  But that was, again, because we were completely alone, just the two of us, and I was 5 months pregnant.  So carrying his seat with me was pretty impossible.

But when we travel in November, we'll be gate checking one seat (and using the other on the plane for my 2 year old).  To me, it's NBD.  In a car seat bag, and checked at the gate, I feel comfortable with it.  About as comfortable as I am with using (in a car) a $40 car seat.  So it works out.
