Babies: 3 - 6 Months

This no eating thing is killing me...

My DD is getting so distracted during the day that she won't hardly eat. She was at her grandmother's today for 8 hours and only ate 5.5 oz. I brought her home and immediately fed her an entire 6 oz bottle, but I had no phone, no computer, no TV. Her grandma has the TV on at all times and DD gets distracted by it.

The only problem is, that then she's up all night long wanting full bottles every 4 hours. How do I kindly bring this up to grandma? She has DD 2 days a week.

Just be honest. If it's bugging you and affecting your daughter then just talk to her.

Yep. It could also just be the age right now baby is becoming more aware of her surroundings.

  • Grandma doesn't notice that LO is distracted by the TV? It is usually pretty obvious when a baby is distracted by something, as they just want to stare at it rather than eat. Could it be another reason that she isn't eating much with Grandma? Anyways, if you want her to try something different, just say something like "Hm, 5.5 oz isn't that much. I've noticed that she doesn't eat well when she is distracted by things like TV. Why don't you try sitting in a quiet, dim room to get her to eat more."

    I agree.

In an 8 hour period DS usually has 18 ounces! And I definitely notice when he does get enough during the day he wakes at night to eat frequently.

Whoa really? Is that typical? I am really curious, as the most my little guy has had while I am away at work (7 hours) is 14 oz or so, and that was probably during a growth spurt. More typical is 10oz. This is breast milk. Sorry for hijacking, I could probably make a separate post with this question (maybe tomorrow).

ETA Just noticed your baby is 2 months older than mine. . . so that probably has something to do with it :)

  • Well, we had that conversation this morning...I told her that I had to feed DD in her room with the lights off after every nap, and had started giving her a bottle every 3-4 hours whether she started whining for it or not. And we've had the "she gets distracted by the TV" conversation several times. But grandma turns on VH1 music videos for DD-she even has them DVR-ed! I don't know how to be more clear without yelling it in her ear. Ugh.

I'm mobile bumping so I can't see ages, but my LO is 3 months and is BF'd and eats 16 oz over 10 hours at day care.

  • My tv is on a lot when we are home. DD actually is bored by it and gets mad if we sit down to watch it lol. I'm sure yours will get over the novelty soon and find her appetite again, but you could ask grandma to set aside 20 minutes with no tv to let her focus on eating. I see nothing wrong with that.

  • Sorry if I repeat anything, I didn't feel like reading.  Anyways, my in laws have my daughter a lot during the week and if I have a concern I let them know (whether they take it in or not).  Between the way they parent and me is very different so I have to choke down a lot.  (Naps is my biggest gripe... but they have her and my niece who is almost 1 so they gotta do what they got to do so I just let that be)

My daughter loves the tv.. the other morning the power was off she was looking for it.  I started to turn her while she is drinking her bottle so she can see the tv too.. you can try to suggest that.
