If you want it to be Steph-en though, I would think about the spelling of the name being different...like how it sounds Stephen.

I would really just pronounce it how I was told it was pronounced. It can go either way, I think.

The first syllable would be a soft "e" sound, not a long "e" sound. Does that make sense? This is exactly my concern with this name. Most people will mispronounce it.

So it would be "ste" like the e sound in "step"

And "fan" like in "fend"

So nothing like "Stephen" or "Steven"

My sister's BF is Stephen, supposed to be pronounced like Steven, but everyone pronounces it "Steff-enn." He often wonders why, because he thinks "Steff-enn" is spelled Stefan, like in your OP.

if you want it pronounced that way, and want to avoid confusion, you can probably go with spelling it Stefen.

I would pronounce Stefan as Stef-on because that is how it is pronounced in the other languages that I am familiar with. I think those familiar with European languages would tend to pronounce it Stef-on, while others could easily be swayed to pronounce it however you want it.
