Sugar Free Juice

LO gets juice mixed in with her oatmeal every morning, but I hate the fact that is has so much sugar in it. Is it okay to give her sugar free juice or is it better for her to continue getting the Gerber juice?

I know it's a dumb question, but I guess I'm wondering if the Gerber juice is made differently. What makes it better?

Re: Sugar Free Juice

  • Can I ask why you mix juice in lo's cereal? Can you do a fruit pure instead? I'm not giving any juice till 2 years old, but that's just me. I would check the juice contents if you are thinking no sugar added bc sugar substitutes would be way worse IMO than regular sugar.

Her pediatrician suggested it. They said she can have up to 6 oz. of juice a day, but we only give her one ounce. We have issues with constipation, so the one ounce helps her a lot.

Why are you putting juice in her oatmeal??? I might be on the extreme end of the spectrum when it comes to juice because DS gets NONE. Zero.

To answer your question though, I wouldn't do sugar free because of the artificial sweeteners they add.

I didn't even think about that. I'll stay with the regular ones.

  • It doesn't have to be the Gerber brand. Any juice that says 100% juice is best.  I don't think the Gerber brand is any better, I think it's just a marketing gimmick so Gerber can sell more products.
  • I don't know why a 9 to 12 month old needs to have juice at all?? I'm not super extreme but I don't see the need for him to have it til atleast 2 years old. As far as helping her digestion, we give DS prune puree whenever he's having trouble.
  • I should have said marketing scheme, not gimmick.
  • My DD also gets no juice at all. All it is is sugar water. Everything good about fruit has been removed when it's made into juice. Try the prune puree like the PP suggested.

  • I don' t know about gerber juice, but in general there is a difference between sugar-free beverages, which would most likely use artificial sweetener, and no-sugar-added juice, which would have the naturally-occuring fructose from the fruit, but no added sucrose (refined sugar). The latter is the type you want, and my pediatrician also mentioned juice (particularly apple) as an aid for constipation.
  • Juice is loaded with natural sugars, especially apple and grape.  As long as you get one that is 100% juice that should be fine.  You can also water it down.

Prune juice will help with constipation.

Some of them have aspartame in it! I found that out after buying light yogurt.
