  A little overhang is fine. I think the cut off is 30 percent for allowable overhang.

  What's allowable depends on the carseat manufacturer and your car manufacturer. I've often heard that up to 20% overhang is allowable but more than that can cause the seat to over rotate in an accident. Check both the carseat owner's manual and your car owner's manual for more info.

  If you're still unclear after reading the manual you might want to go to the group "car seats for the littles" on Facebook. There you will be able to ask your questions about the seat as well as post pictures and get answers from techs and others who are very knowledgeable about proper car seat usage
