UO Thursday

Anyone got one?  I'm working on mine!

Re: UO Thursday

  • I think pool floats for children who don't know how to swim are unsafe and should be banned from kiddie pools.  I went to the pool yesterday and saw no fewer than 6 children unattended (with moms lounging on the side of the pool) who were in these contraptions.  Water safety is my big thing, and I just can't understand no supervising your child at all times.

  • I can't stand it when I see a bow or flower directly on top of a baby's head and not angled. Drives me crazy. I want to walk up and angle it for them!

I'm all about women's empowerment, but I think some people take it too far.  Some random wrote like a 3 page article on how Robin Thicke's song 'Blurred Lines' is demeaning to women.  First of all, it's a great song.  Secondly, STFU.  People get upset over everything today.  I don't know about you, but I don't want to live in a world where we are 100% censored and having an opinion is deemed inappropriate.

Im with you on this, everyone these days is so super emotional over EVERYTHING!

I know floaties are a big debate on the interwbz but both me and my sister learned to swim that way. And we both swam by 2 and 3. The floaties actually gave us more confidence.

I think people that push or try to sell their business on their own personal page on FB is annoying.  I have several friends that have a business and I get about 4 to 5 updates a day about said business.  It is effing annoying.  I have since hid them, but seriously...cut that sh!t out.

Create a FB page for your business and ask your friends to "like" it.  If they are interested in your business they will like your page and then only they will be subject to the slew of crap you post everyday.  I'm not interested in your (enter in the name of the product you are selling) and no matter how many times your post about it...I'm not going to buy it.

Hey Hey Hey now..i just finally made a facebook page for my business and I asked my friends to like it. Indifferent

I do not plan on updating it 5 times a day though, I can't even update my personal stuff that much.

I know and I liked your page!  But that is because I love your work.  If I wasn't interested then you have done the nice thing by allowing me the option to chose whether or not I wanted to see updates on your business.  You did the right thing IMO Wink

    I know I can't really say anything yet, since I only have an 11 month old, but it irritates the SH!T out of me when I see friends/family members with kids who cook a separate meals for them every damn night. My sister literally makes 3 separate meals for dinner every day. nbsp;She says "what else am I going to do? they will only eat X and won't touch Y Z" blah blah blah. Yes, I know I am not in her shoes but come the fluck on man! I didn't have a CHOICE in what I ate until I was older, I ate what was cooked. Don't like it? Starve. And I am the LEAST picky eater you will meet now, and will try just about anything. I hope I don't eat my words but I will never ever get sucked into a life of providing personalized catering services on a nightly basis to my children.nbsp;

As a mom of an almost three year old I will say this...I won't "cook" a separate meal either. He's offered what we are eating. If he doesn't eat it, then he will get himself a snack after bath which is usually fruit, yogurt or easy Mac. He usually helps himself. He has "his" shelf in the pantry w his approved foods. I would rather that than him going to bed hungry.

I'm not a big fan of watching movies, especially in the movie theater. I just can't sit still for 2+ hours! Plus, the darkness doesn't help since I've fallen asleep more than once at the theater.

I'd much rather watch things at home where I can come and go as I please and control the lighting.

This is me too!  I used to be able to watch a movie, but now, I feel like my attention span for that stuff has dramatically shortened.  Either that, or the movies I'm watching are dumb.  Which is a possibility Stick out tongue

I don't think it's the devices it's the false sense of security that it gives some parents.  "Oh, my kids got a floaty on so I can just fall asleep in the sun."

This.  I don't really mind it if the parent is in the pool within arms reach of the child, but I see WAY too many moms who plop their kid in it, then seem to think the kid is safe, and take the opportunity to sun themselves on the side of the pool while their kid floats farther and farther away from them.

It only takes a second for a child to slip silently below the surface, and it's your responsibility as a parent to watch them.  The lifeguard is there, yes, but ultimately, your child's safety is your responsibility.

  • I do not care for people painting their baby girl's toes. Nor do I care for baby bikinis. Also, one night on vacation when DH and I went out for the night by ourselves, I saw way too many babies out and about around 9, 10, even 11pm. I know you're on vacation but come on, get that baby to bed already!

I am so over the praise for celebrities that die.  I really don't want to hear about James Gandolfini anymore.  Flags at half staff -inappropriate.  Moment of silence at a baseball game - inappropriate.

Is it sad for "art" that he died, yes. Do I feel for his family, yes.  Death is sad.  But all he did was play another person.  I mean c'mon.  We need to stop glorifying people like this.

This reallllllllllllly pissses me off. When they did that for Whitney Houston I wanted to shoot the tv.  She was a great singer (back in the day) but she died a crackhead, no need to glorify that.

I don't really know the whole story, but from what I've gathered, didn't she say it YEARS ago? And now all of a sudden people are going crazy about it? That is the part I don't get. People make mistakes and its ridiculous to crucify someone for something that was done so long ago.

If I'm mistaken and she just recently said this....then I do have a problem with that. Even if you are from an older generation, you are still living in today's society, as a celebrity, in the spotlight.

From what I've read/heard: she did say the N word years ago, but recently spoke of wanting to have a pre-cival war era plantation style wedding theme - including black waiters in white uniforms that were so neat looking and respectful - her words.

I agree that something you said years ago shouldn't be held against you, but the wedding thing - wanting to hire servers that look like slaves - Indifferent

Yes, the current lawsuit accuses her of being racist by mistreating the servers in her restarants based on race.  It also alleges that she uses the N word regularly.  Whether or not there is merit in the accusations, I don't know. But no one is suing her for using that word 30 years ago...although her business partners are dropping her because of it.

I guess my issue is if that word causes this much stir for one person it should apply to all.  I find it offensive when the car next to me pulls up with their music blaring and that word is spewed out every 2.5 seconds. But nobody doesn't sign or pull record deals because of it, right? It's insane and hypocrisy at it's best.

Yes!  He was just an actor who was overweight and died of a heart attack.  Who cares?!  I think James Gandolfini is getting more attention than the death of Nelson Mandela will get in the country.  It's so sad because Nelson Mandela will be in the history books forever but who will remember The Sopranos?

My 3 year old as a baby would eat anything but with his sensory issues it has gotten progressively worse on him only eating certain foods despite therapy and me being "mean mommy" and making him eat what we are eating.

With that being said I do not make a whole different meal for him but I will make a big batch of something I know he will eat every few days that way if he won't eat what we are having I will make him his own plate.

He does sit down with us and will first have the same plate as us and must try one bite of everything but 80 percent of the time he can't tolerate the textures and will end up with his own food. I have always made him try what we are having and it blows my mind when moms just make them what they know the kids will eat rather than making them at least try whatever you are having!

  • I think it's dumb to take a 1 year old (or younger) to places that are expensive to get into, like the zoo or the aquarium, etc for the sole purpose of stimulation. Unless you have an older child and the little one is along for the ride, or if you and your SO just want to go for your entertainment, I think it's a pointless waste of money. Your kid is going to get just as much stimulation walking around WalMart. I'm saving the zoo trips until Taylor is old enough to actually know what she's seeing.
  • I also don't like oreos.

I had no idea what Paula Deen was in trouble for until reading this. Frankly, I don't give a hoot. I guess everyone has forgotten that it's not illegal to use the N word and it's not illegal to be racist. It is illegal to discriminate though. Using the N word is derogatory but it's neither discriminatory nor slanderous. In fact, before the N word became derogatory, it simply meant ignorant. Therefore, it can apply to anyone.

My UO: I really can't stand stupid people. It annoys me to no end when people are just uneducated about things and believe everything they are told. We have so many resources available to us, so much research, so many varying view points and people still choose to believe exactly what they are told and not question anything.

I also can't stand when people are afraid of other races. I live in one of the most dangerous cities in America. STL is in the top ten for a lot of bad things; murder, std's, worst places to live, etc. I will have you know, that I feel safer walking down the street in the worst parts of St. Louis than I do walking in a parking garage alone. 9 times out of 10, if I'm going to be abducted, raped or murdered it's going to be by a white man, not black, not Mexican, not Asian, he will be white. If I am found dead in the city, it's because I was hit by a stray bullet or I decided to become a hooker, even then, it will be a white man that kills me.

My UO: I will never go to a chiropractor, ever. I know many of you go and love them, but I personally would rather see a medical doctor for any of my issues than a chiro. I don't want this to turn into a "silly doula" thing, so I'm sorry if any of you are chiros or whatever, but it's just not for me. It seems they only temporarily fix the issue, and the whole idea of someone cracking my joints just skeeves me out. Tongue Tied

ITA! I had always thought they were a crock. Then when I had terrible sacroiliac pain postpartum (I have always had problems with that joint) my bff convinced me to go and I reluctantly gave in because I was in so much pain. The office I went to was such a shady looking practice, the chiro shamed me for having an epidural and said that was the cause of my pain, (which it obviously wasn't since I have always had issues with that joint, even pre-preg) and I left not feeling any better than I did going in. After that I went back to my PCP and did a few rounds of PT. Fixed me right up. I also can't stand chiropractors who do the same work on babies that they do with adults. Sorry, I know this will prob get me flamed and I know a lot of you swear by them. But personally, I wouldn't let some quack with no medical degree crack my baby.

I agree with so many of these today, especially the over editing of pictures.

Mine is that I'm tired of seeing owl decor everywhere I look. I think it was cute at first, but now it's overdone. The past four babies I have known of that have been born have owl nurseries.

    I LOVE WICKED!!!

OMG I love Wicked!  Its no RENT, but sh!t, its pretty damn good!

Maybe its because you didn't see it with Joel Grey as The Wizard, Idina Menzel as Elphie, and Kristen Chenoweth as Glinda. ;)  I believe Schwartz wrote Idina's music specifically for her.

The book is very dark...not what I was expecting and very different from the stage.

Side note: I'm such a groupie that when I saw an anniversary production of RENT, I had 4th row center seats.  When Adam Pascal came out, I cried.  CRIED.  Bawled in my seat.  Couldn't believe I was seeing it. :-p

ETA: fun fact--Idina was Maureen in the original RENT cast, too!

I didnt know she was supposed to be Glinda! She would make a perfect Glinda though! She is so tiny and perky. I love her. She is the opposite of me lol

    1. About the kids out late... I think it's stupid when you have a toddler or something. But Evie's bedtime wasn't until 1030 until she was about 6 months old. We went about our life with her. She slept until 10am, so it worked. I agree there are times when it isn't great to have a kid out, but if you can get your grocery shopping done at 930 at night... your kid is most likely going to be with you.

    2. I agree about the Paula Deen stuff... it was stupid, and she's an idiot, and i don't like her... but back off sheeesh

my UO: I like teachers, I used to teach, they do a lot of hard work, and are underpaid, and deserve more respect than they get. But, I'm so so so sick of the posts about how teachers are better than anyone else. I never see posts about the client data coordinator who is on call 24/7 (literally), and gets paid less than most teachers, and only gets 2 weeks of vacation a year. 99% of jobs are thankless, and it's a part of life. LIFE IS THANKLESS! I'm sick of it.

    Flame away.

OMG.     You can't just say that!  You HAVE to like teachers.  You can't have an opinion.  I hate you for forever now.

I would just like to say I've seen Wicked 7 times. Yes. 7. It was very powerful to me. It's supposed to be coming back to Chicago at the end of the year. Guess what I'm getting for Christmas?

Indifferent I am soooo jealous! That's awesome! MH lived in Chicago for 7 years and he's not impressed by it anymore so I'm glad to hear there are some Chicago(ans? ites?) who still like it! Big Smile

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.

  • I hate Broadway plays.  I avoid them like the plague, but have probably been to 12-15 because of school trips and family obligations.  Cats was by far the worst.  Those nasty cats come out of everywhere to touch you.  I hate it.
