High-Risk Pregnancy

Overweight and Pregnant

This is my 1st pregnancy, hubby and I have been trying for almost 2 years. We are very excited. I am just that since I am overweight (5'6,  309lbs) we will have a complicated pregnancy. Any tips on managing weight to reduce risk factors? 9 weeks now. Heard heartbeat at 7 weeks. Next appointment is next week. So far so good.

Re: Overweight and Pregnant

  • Congrats on your pregnancy. I was 246 with this pregnancy I am currently 255 19wks. I honestly dont really watch what i eat BUT I would say just watch out for the carbs. I see a high risk dr for reasons that isnt my weight but she highly suggested i walk after my biggest meal which in my case is dinner..

Good luck and happy healthy 9months..

  • Congrats on your pregnancy!
Im also overweight. I found out early on that I have GD and I think with all the monitoring and following their meal plans has helped me. I am 25 weeks and I go back and fourth with a 9-12 lb weight gain. I also try to walk on the weekends since I don't have much time during the week.

  • I guess I am a lucky one I weighed 255 before and I'm 5'6. So far I have only gained 5lbs and I'm at 23 weeks. Just be cautious about what you eat, try to walk more, and make sure to take your prenatals.
  • Take walks, limit white carbs, no soda and sweets : good luck
  • I have been really good with the sweets just no desire...but I catch myself munching on random stuff. So the goal is to get it out the house and not have it accessible. Trying to start walking 2-3 days a week. I heard swimming is good too. The TX heat is killing me.
  • No one has found that their metabolism has significantly increased since they've gotten pregnant. I'm overweight, but I'm 33 weeks and only gained 6 lbs so far. I try to eat lots of fruits and veggies and protein and I go for walks almost every night.
  • My weight was 230 im 5'8 and ive gained 5lbs so far I think its all in the boobs tho. :( My 1st appointment is in 2 weeks, ill be 10 weeks. Did the Dr's give any suggestions because of weight? Im sick all day and cannot imagine walking other than from my car to work and all I can keep down is soup and crackers plus sips of powerade.

  • Congratulations - we are excited for you.

My daughter was about 290 when she delivered my grandson.  she is an inch or so taller.  I was concerned about her weight because of the risks of complications.  She said she was eating healthy, but after visiting a couple times, i could see what they both were eating and it was anything but.

Not sure how much she gained, but her weight did cause a tremendous amount of trouble at delivery.  The hospital could have handled it better, but it was a disaster.  They were going to induce because she was almost 2 weeks late.  Had her come in and started the drip.2  Seven hours later thee department head halted it but only said it was because over night they aren't fully staffed.  It was a major setback, she was despondent and I was pissed.

In the end, he was concerned about her size and the complications it brings.  They DID need more people when they finally put the drip back on the next morning.  I was kicked out of the room and about  staff were ushered in.

Go to a nutritionist.  Weight does play a role on pregnancy and delivery and women who are over try to lose for some reason.  That probably is the worst thing to do.  If you are concerned, talk it over with the doctor.  The better you are managing your health NOW, the better the chances you wont have any complications later.

I would never wish what happened to my daughter on anyone.  It was one of the most horrible experiences of my life, and hers, I am sure.
  • I started at 244 lbs 5'2. I'm 36 weeks now and have gained 15 lbs so far. I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks and following the diet has definitely helped. Since I got diagnosed I've only gained 3 lbs. I would suggest looking up some stuff about the GD diet and trying to follow that some. It will help to keep the weight gain at a healthy rate. Good luck and congrats to you!

  • im 25 weeks I have gained 9 pounds so far, I gain a few pounds lose a few pounds. I talked to the nurse assigned to me because I'm high risk for other reasons then being overweight she told me she would be happy with a weight gain of no more then 20 pounds. Considering I have only gained 9 pounds and have no signs of GD is good. I watch a bit more carefully what I eat, the last week was really bad cause we were super busy so we ate out alot, but I mostly kept it to salads and sandwiches. I did not like sweets in the beginning but now I'm craving stuff like powdered doughnuts I have a few here and there. The nurse reminded me it is not about quantity it is about quality if your eating healthy and you have a few unhealthy snacks it is not going to hurt you. My one MFM dr said 10-12 pounds and the other MFM dr I saw said as long as it is under 20....

  • I'm a little under 4'10 and started out my pregnancy at 225lbs. I have only gained a total of 5lbs, and I'm currently 36w2d. I was made to take the 1hr GD test early and then repeat it around 28 weeks. I passed both times. Just because you're overweight doesn't mean you'll have a complicated pregnancy. Sometimes doctors like to "bully" or scare their overweight patients.

Drink lots of water, make smart food choices, and try to maintain some sort of physical activity. It's basically the things that any pregnant woman should do regardless of size.

  • I am 20+5weeks now and gained 15 lbs. Really bummed about it. The baby is fine so far. I have been trying to watch what I eat and water more water but everything seems to make me sick :(

And I am so tired when I get off at night that I just want to sleep.
I take my glucose test in 4 weeks and I am praying for the best. I have NEVER had issues in the past with my sugar so I am hoping I will be ok. :(

    Just a little sad!
