teething experts enter...

LO just got her first tooth poking through last night and she has been sleeping it off but will just wail out of nowhere.

She loves the mesh feeder with ice and a cold wash cloth, I feel like I should give her tylenol but I just have this anxiety around pain meds for babies...

what worked for you and should I just give in to the meds?

Re: teething experts enter...

  • I'm no expert, but we have used Tylenol when nothing else seems to be working. We try frozen fruit chunks, mesh feeder, comfort nursing, and distractions first. But there are times when he is doing his pain cry and nothing else is working. I know if it was me I wouldn't want to have to just suffer.

Also we don't give a full dose. We started with the 2.5 instead of the 3.75 and since that seems to help we just stuck with that.

I try everything before meds. Frozen washcloth, mesh feeder with frozen fruit, frozen teethers, and sometimes just chewing on mummy's fingers.

When all else fails and my normally happy baby is moaning in pain, I know it's time for meds. Tylenol doesn't seem to work for V. We give Motrin. We try not to give it more than 2 nights in a row but if he is miserable I will.

The other thing I will say...we tried to out him to sleep and not give it to him, figuring if he woke uncomfortable we could give it to him in the MOTN. I find that doesn't control the pain as much as giving it to him before he goes down for the night. My guess is the teething pain gets worse at night?

  • We only has to give Tylenol once for teething, LO1 has an amber necklace and wore it 24/7 while she got her teeth.

  • I worry about pain meds too. So far, for each tooth, there has been a night or two where Tylenol was necessary. He was inconsolable. Poor babies. Just imagine being in pain and not having any relief?! I only gave it a bedtime or the MOTN twice with each tooth. The first one was worse for some reason. Anyways... IMO, try everything and if all else fails, Tylenol. They need some extra help to get relief sometimes. Who are we to deny them that? Poor poopsies.

Ditto, we can usually hold off on the tylenol during the day with the distractions you mentioned.  But if he's having trouble going down bc he's crying out in pain, then I go for the Tylenol.  I have heard it's worse at night, and F for sure acts like it hurts worse at night.  Even if I think he might go down, it's worse letting him wake up again in pain and then giving the tylenol and waiting for it to work, IMO.
