Natural Birth

Late?

I have read a few articles that say going overdue can be hereditary. My mother went to 42 weeks 1 day with my brother before going into labor and then still ended up with a section. Does anybody know any actual studies that back up the claim that this is hereditary thing?

Any BTDT moms have mothers who were overdue? Were you also?

I know it's probably dumb to worry about this, but I can't quite help it! I feel like I've spent so much energy planning and preparing to have a natural birth, and I'm worried going overdue could threaten to ruin my plans.

I know many people will let themselves go pretty late. How late will you ladies let yourselves go?

Re: Late?

  • They didn't date pregnancies that well a generation or so ago. I really wouldn't assume much from your mom going "late". Everything was based - at best - on LMP.

I'll consent to an induction somewhere between 41w3 days (my doctor's preference) and 42 weeks (mine) depending on the circumstances and how favorable my cervix is. Last time I gave birth on my due date, though!

  • I was supposedly 16 days late, but my mom could have had her dates wrong. I went into labor with DS1 at 41w1d, and 41.5w with DS2 (his due date was very fuzzy, as I didn't have an LMP to go off of, just a week he was conceived). My mom had four other kids, three of whom weren't induced, but I don't know if they were late also.

I'm comfortable having BPP every few days past 41 weeks if everything is fine with me and the baby.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

My mother was a week late with both me and my sister. Both natural home births.

My sister's first pregnancy went 8 days late, natural birth. Second one went about 5 days late.

My pregnancy went 9 days late, at which point I was induced.

I would be comfortable going to 42 weeks. I was induced at 9 days late because of a concerning u/s. THe u/s proved to be wrong and unreliable (I'm glad it was wrong and that our baby girl was healthy, but annoyed that we relied on technology that turned out to be bad and got induced).

  • I know of no studies, but as pp said dating was not as accurate back then.  I know my mother went 11 days past her EDD with me (her first) and I think my brother was like right around her EDD.  I had both my babies at 40w3d (charting).

My comfort level would have been going to 42w.  My CNMs recommended induction on the evening of 41w6d and I would have gone with that since I wasn't going to argue over what amounts to half a day.

  • 42 weeks is how late I'm comfortable going, unless stress tests indicate something different.

And I'll be trying everything I can to help before.... chiro, accupuncture, accupressure, epo, sex, walks, and relaxing!

My older brother was 3 weeks early according to docs.
I was born on my due date.

My DS came 4 days early.
    DD was 6 days late.

So, no, I didn't fit the pattern of early/on time.

Never had the induction talk before DS, but I would have been induced at 41w2d or 41w3d with DD depending on hospital availability. It was my MW's preference and I didn't feel compelled to wait until 42w.

Yup.  They did not have as much fancy equipment back then to help date pregnancies.  They relied on LMP which can be inaccurate as you can ovulate earlier or later in your cycle.  H and I discussed induction and we felt comfortable inducing at 41 weeks 4 days.  Studies have show that the risk to the fetus outweigh the risk of induction after 42 weeks.  I went into labor at 39 weeks 4 days.

  • I was told I was nearly three weeks overdue but as was said, I don't think they dated pregnancies as accurately then. My grandmother was apparently told that babies are born anywhere between 34 to 46 weeks, which we obviously wouldn't say anymore.

My boys were 10 days over and three days early, respectively.

  • I had a successful home water birth at 41w1d. My midwife would have stripped my membranes anytime after 41w1d though. Apparently 41w1d is the true average length of gestation and not actually 40w. I was surprised to learn that!

  • No actual studies, but I've heard here and there over the years of all the women in the family routinely going to 42-43w, between sisters or moms.  That doesn't mean it'll be the case with you as there are a lot of variables, but I have heard stories.

I'll go to 42w and would consider a day or two beyond depending on the circumstances.  But that's about it. No 43w for me, no way!  I'm just not comfortable with that, unless there was a big question on dates swinging it a week or more, but even then, my mw won't let me go that long, and I'm ok with that.

The 41w1d gestation is the generally accepted average for a FTM only, FYI (not subsequent pregnancies).

Yes you're totally right. Average for FTMs

  • Thanks everyone for chiming in. It does seem that there is a slight pattern in the people who responded. If their mothers went late, they seemed to go a bit late too. I think I'm going to do what one pp said and mentally change my due date to 8 days after it is now.

Another thing I thought of is that my mother didn't have access to things like accupuncture or chiropractic care so even if I go over, I may have some tools to help me go a little less over than she did.

Another benefit of those tools is if you're doing it, and baby and pelvis is well aligned, then you can be rest assured that baby just isn't ready if you still haven't gone into labor. Where otherwise, you might wonder if labor isn't kicking in because of malposition or the like, ya know?
