Success after IF

High prolactin

Mine came back at 35 (sort of not fasting because I didn't know I was having it done) and they like it under 30.  Anyone have this and what was the treatment for it?

Re: High prolactin

  • The first  time I had CD3 bloodwork done mine came back elevated.  They told me to come in again the next day to have it retested again and then it was totally normal.

Before we knew it was a fluke (they had said it could have been because of stress - I had just driven in rush hour traffic to get there) they had told me that if it came back elevated again they would do an MRI (or whatever the scan is where they can look at your brain) because they said it could be something with the pituitary gland (if I remember correctly .... sorry this was over 3 years ago).  I then believe they told me I would have to take medication for it if it didn't go down.

I also remember laughing pretty hard when they asked me if I had had "relations" before coming in for the draw because I guess nipple stimulation can cause it to be elevated too (HA!)

If I were you I would ask to have it retested after fasting.

  • I had the MRI as a part of my IF work up and my levels were elevated enough to be put on medication but not crazy high (I'll be damned if I remember my levels or even the meds I was on.  Sorry!).  On another note, I was taken off the prolactin medication once I started my IVF cycle, so who knows if it helped.

i agree with Saraevh though.  Get retested.  I got asked the nipple question too.  Made for good dinner conversation with DH!

  • I had repeated tests that showed high levels. I had a MRI. It showed a small pituatary tumor. I took bromocriptin(sp) until after my BFP.
