NBFR Cat Issue

I have no where practical to put the littler box other than the downstairs laundry room, which is right off the open concept kitchen/livingroom. I changed the litter YESTERDAY and already the entire house smells like cat piss. I seriously don't know how his pee could stink up the whole living area in that amount of time. Ugh.

I live in the country enough that I won't allow him to be going outside to use the bathroom because of fox and coyote. Is there something else I can do? I already buy good litter.

Re: NBFR Cat Issue

  • I put some Arm and Hammer stuff made specifically for cat boxes in the litter every day or every other day. It's in the cat aisle near the litter normally. I just sprinkle some on top. I also have an air freshener in the room. I also have an odor eliminator near the box. It's this one. For me, those keep the smell away. I don't have any other advice though.

I commiserate. People think that because I am a vet tech, I like or at least don't mind animal smells. True only to an extent, and a stinky house or pet is not not on my tolerance list.

I HATE the smell of a litterbox, even clean litter smells to me. But I love mytolerance cats more.

I scoop the litterbox once or even twice daily. I sprinkle baking soda every other day or every three days. I completely change the box once or twice a week, washing it every time with bleach and a little dawn dishsoap. I let it soak a few minutes before scrubbing and drying and refilling. I only put a shallow layer of litter box because one common problem is pieces of fecal matter that get left behind in deep litter after scooping still emit terrible odors and bacteria. A shallow layer makes it easier to make sure you get everything, and just add a little litter as needed after scooping. Also when filling the box, put a thin layer if litter, a sprinkling of baking soda, and then another thin layer of litter. The cats will stir the baki g soda around every time they scratch around in there.

The key to keeping the odors down is washing your box regularly with either bleach and dishsoap or vinegar to keep the amonia levels down. This weekly or biweekly activity makes a huge difference!

But I still hate litterboxes regardless. Thanks for the air freshener tip! I would love to have something to hang right by the box.
  • i would say it depends on your litter brand too. if you have more than one cat, make sure you are using multicat litter. freshstep and tidy cat have always been good choices for us, combined with cleaning multiple times per day usually once in the morning before work and once at night before bed.

  • 1) scoop more than once a day.

    2) try different litters - and step outside of the clay box. Your cat's urine may not work well with clay.

    3) check n what you are feeding him/her. Is cat getting enough water? You may have to add wet food to ensure enough water intake.

    4) have you been to a vet? Your whole house should not reek of urine from just ONE or even TWO uses of the box. So either something is affecting kitty's urine or amount kitty is going.

    5) get a self cleaning box (we actually had one in Germany and it was glorious.

    6) Enclose the litter box.

Like you. We have nowhere to hide the box. So We found an old cabinet that had two front doors. DH cut a whole just big enough on the side of the cabinet for Puddin to go in and out of. The best part, I keep his food and water on the top, so the dogs cannot get to it.

He hasn't been to the vet since we got his shots in December. Hopefully there isn't anything wrong.

We did change him to a cheaper food recently and it made him poo way more often and is stinkier. We are going to change him back, we already discussed that the other day. Hopefully his Pee will be better then too.

I can't get him to drink hardly anything. His water just sits there. He will jump in the tub after I shower and drink the left over water dripping from the faucet though. I was thinking of getting him one of those kitty fountain water dishes. Do you think some wet food would be enough to help?

  • Definitely make sure that you are dumping out and cleaning regularly, this is what my DH does when it starts to smell really bad.  We also have one of those ceramic heated wax melters that you can find at Walmart plugged into the laundry room and you would be amazed at how well it masks the smell.
