What do you wear to work?

I have WFH as a contract (independent worker) so I have been able to wear whatever - usually jeans and a cardigan, etc.  But I am reviewing my closet for possible business casual or business professional and I have a lot to mix and match with but I'm curious what is your day to day work wear?  I am thinking of buying a few more pairs of dress pants - something I can dress up or down.

I have cognac heels, nude heels, a pencil skirt, a brown of dress pants, grey pinstripe, black, solid grey (I hate them though, I have no idea why I hold onto them they are not comfortable) and then standard khakis, etc.  I have cardigans and some pullover style shirts that can be dressed up or down.

In my shopping cart now I have black pants, navy pants, a navy pencil skirt, four more cardigans, a white button up in short sleeve, black heels - 2 3/4 inch and that's it for now.  I'd like to find some more shirts to go under the cardigans.  For work now I usually wear a solid color like black, white or grey under my cardigans, sometimes tanks that match.

Any suggestions would be great thanks!  It has been several years since I had to consider this and I won't buy anything until I have a job offer and have visited the office to know what others wear, but this is general stuff that can be dressed up and down so I'm comfortable looking at what I have so far.  Thanks!

Re: What do you wear to work?

  • I really hate button ups - I feel like they always gap at the boobs and look frumpy on me.  They just don't work!!!  You described what I wore in a previous position - I love flats and comfortable heels, I think sperrys would be too casual for this job but everything else you described is what I had in mind so at least I'm of the right mindset.  I don't think it will be a suit type of environment at all so I'm thinking of just going with what I have.  I ADORE Jcrew so I'm on their site now and they are probably my favorite place to shop.  Gap is too weird with sizing and I am really picky and prefer cotton to anything else and JCrew fits that bill usually.

  • My uniform is the same as yours.  Cardis, tanks and pants.  If I was in an office the pants would be slacks, and I would do a bit more with fun shoes (I tend to wear "dressy flip flops" because I WFH).

  • I hate my legs - I really have never been comfortable wearing dresses, even in weddings, etc. so I am going to likely stick with pants!  But I have some really comfy shoes and they are in great shape and I know they are comfy for being on my feet since I wore them when I did marketing and had to walk and carry a lot of stuff from office to office so I think I'm good there although I do need one pair of black heels.  I think I will buy some skinny belts to wear with some trousers so I can change the feel/look easily with accessories.  I think I could do that with jewelry easily as well so I think I'm pretty set up I just need some basic easy to mix in pieces.

I work by myself half of the time and with a 72 y/o man who often comes into work in his pajamas, so I wear whatever I would normally wear for the day. I do work in an office building, though so I tend to throw a light cardigan over anything sleeveless. Basically my only goal is to not look like a whore...Or homeless. HA!

I try to look nice regardless if I'm working or not.

  • I wear jeans to work daily. Unless they are dirty then I drag out a pair of khakis. Tops are nicer tee shirts and I usually have a light sweater just in case the building decides to freeze us out. In the winter, same thing just with a sweater. Shoes are always some kind of boot/dress shoe except Friday!
