78 degrees?

MH is frugal (to put it nicely) and he's very particular about not spending too much money on heating and cooling. Prior to this summer it has never bothered me that MH keeps the AC at a fairly high temp as compared to others, because I am generally one of those people who is always cold and I bring a sweater with me everywhere.  I have been feeling really warm lately and realized that MH is keeping the AC at 78 degrees!  78 degrees is just too warm for this pregnant body!  I really don't think it would have bothered me any other year, but he cannot do this to me this year!  Where do the rest of you keep your AC?  Is 78 degrees even reasonable?  It seems so warm to me right now!

  • I have no ac in my house right now ::frowny face::
It's about 80some degrees in here so I know how you feel.

Ours is programmed to go up to 78 during the day when we aren't here and it kicks down to 74 before we get home and then 72 at night when we go to bed.  78 is way too warm for me.

  • Keep mine at 72. I couldn't imagine it any higher then that.

  • We keep ours around 68 during the day and drop it down to 64 a night because it gets hot up in our bedroom (the thermostat is downstairs in the kitchen.)

Probably a bit rediculous, but our electric bill really isn't that high.

  • Ours stays at 73 round the clock and it's perfect. I can't imagine 78 degrees!

  • Ours is usually set during the day around 76-78 and I usually turn it down to 72 in the evnening. If DH gets home first he usually puts it on 74 ;)

  • I am always hot so I keep my AC at 70 - I am spoiled like that I guess.

  • I think I would probably melt in 78 degrees. I've been so miserably hot this entire pregnancy and it's of course gotten worse in these 90 degree temps lately. I'm home all day so we keep it at 72 during the day (on a super hot day I kick it down to 70). At night that bad boy goes down to 68 and sometimes even 66 since it's always hotter upstairs in our house. Our bill is definitely going up but I honestly don't care at this point.

  • LOL.. I was just having a discussion about this with some friends on FB...  We keep our a/c between 80-82 during the day (and we both work from home so are home all the time) and set it to 83 at night.  We're in AZ so it's over 100 outside (supposed to get up to 117 this weekend!!!), and it's amazing how 78 is actually cold to me inside if we have the air set that low.  83 at night is perfect, but I have to admit that 82 during the day is starting to not feel as comfortable as it used to be.

  • Ours is set to 78.  If we didn't keep it that warm during the summer the A/C would run all the time.  I don't want to pay a $500 electric bill.

The only time I get a bit warm is if I'm doing chores, like vacuuming.  I'll just turn the fan on in the room I'm in and it helps me cool off.

  • Any other year DH is the one freezing me out, and I try not to complain about it because he works out in the elements all day and deserves to be comfortable at home at least. But I've been trying to keep the house cool, and he will turn the temp up because "he's cold. " I told him to suck it up because I'm roasting. He can put on a sweater, I can only take off so much clothing... I like it about 72 or 73 degrees. Our house is small and pretty well insulated, plus we just got a very efficient new heat pump installed so it's not really that expensive to keep it cooler.

Usually 76. I SAH, but the heat only bothers me if its really humid out. In that case I usually turn in down a degree or two. I'm cheap so I hate turning it on. DS and I spend a lot of time outside by the kiddie pool anyway.

All that being said, I'd turn it down if you're uncomfortable. You're the pregnant one after all. I'd tell DH to shove it.

  • I am always cold...we are in FL so it is crazy hot outside...ours is set to 78, and we sleep with it on 73....That being said the bottom floor is all stone/tile, so I think that helps to cool down the house a lot

Same here.  We have ceiling fans in almost every room so that really helps keeping air moving.  I also have a fan that blows on me during the night.

  • Thanks ladies! You've given me the ammo I need to let him know how ridiculous he is! I was going to turn it down regardless, but its helpful to see what is normal among all of you!

  • We hardly turn ours on due to the fact we have a swamp cooler and that hardly uses any energy but when it's humid out we put the ac to about 78 degrees too and ill put a fan on me if I'm still too hot
  • We typically keep ours at 78. I don't think that's too warm, but I'm always cold, even while pregnant.
