Is anyone avoiding peptides?

I have a makeup primer that I cannot live without, and I assumed since it was mineral based that it was okay for pregnant ladies, but I just read the ingredients and saw that it has peptides in it. And apparently they're a no-no.

I asked my doctor at my first prenatal appointment if there were any topical ingredients to make sure to avoid, and the only thing she told me was retinoids. She said she didn't even care if I used salicylic acid zit creams. And she definitely didn't mention peptides.

So...yeah. I don't know. Part of me wants to say, "Eff it, I can't live in a bubble," but part of me feels like a jerk because I'm choosing to continue using a product that has a bad ingredient in it.

Don't even get me STARTED on my deodorant...

Anyway, what would you guys do? Have any of you been avoiding peptides? Or should I just cut myself some slack?

ETA: now I'm having trouble finding where I read that peptides are a no-no, because Google isn't cooperating. I think I read it in From the Hips or something.

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

Re: Is anyone avoiding peptides?

  • Are you sure you mean all peptides?  peptides are short chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds... Peptides make polypeptides, and proteins are made up of one or more polypeptides bound by specific entities...  Sort of hard to avoid....

ETA: If anyone finds info on this please share...  Unfortunately I'm swamped and can't look it up right now.   I'm intrigued.

ETA2: is it because some of them perform signaling functions? maybe it was just extraneous peptide hormones?  I'm so intrigued by this...

  • I haven't heard anything about peptides.

I do try to avoid parabens, sodium larel/laureth sulfates, BPA and a bunch of other endocrin disrputors.

However, as bad as I know aluminum based anti-perspirant is for me in general, I just can't get past having wet pits all day. Honestly, I tried every natural deodorant out there and they're all worthless. Some of them don't even take care of the odor problem as they claim to and none of them have anti-perspirant qualities whatsoever. So I'm with you there. You have to pick your battles I guess.

Lemme try to find it. I'm about to give up on The Google though.

  • I'll have to look in my book when I get home tonight. I'll update if there's anything interesting. Maybe I'm just having pregnancy brain and confusing peptides with something else.

Parabens maybe? I know this is a common one to try and avoid.

My pregnancy brain may be confusing the two. I could swear it was peptides. I would totally DD this post if I were a jerk, haha. Oh well. This thread will be a testament to my ditziness if I get home and can't find peptides in the list I read.

  • Like VGC says, avoiding "peptides" is an odd concept because fundamentally, they're just short amino acids. Combined, they form proteins. Good luck avoiding peptides in all non-makeup situations! I tried to look up some answers for us though. None of this is scientific or peer-reviewed. It is possible you were thinking of parabens, not peptides.

    From a not-so-legit-looking website called paulaschoice.com:

"There is no documented concern about common "cosmeceutical" ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides or other types of antioxidants and cell communicating ingredients when used during pregnancy."

According to WebMD, peptides are a common component of BB creams.

    Nochemicalcosmetics.com reports,

"Peptides cannot usually penetrate the skin and maintain stability due to their hydrophilic (water-loving) nature. In addition, when they are able to penetrate the skin enzymes can break them down, dramatically inhibiting their effects."

  • I do avoid parabens and BPA whenever possible. I'm stricter about it with stuff I use on DD, but I've been even more diligent when it comes to myself since getting pregnant, too. It can be frustrating as parabens especially are in a lot of items.

I use Toms of Maine deodorant and it has actually worked well for me the last few years. I used to have the sweatiest pits ever in my teens/early to mid 20s, but then I guess my hormones leveled out because it hasn't been nearly as bad the last 5 to 7 years.

I'm not sure about the OP's question, but I use soapwalla deodorant. I have to order it online, and it's not cheap but it's not full of nasties. Just wanted to share in case you're interested.
