Sippy cup or bottle?

I know they make sippy cups that can start being used at 4 months. Is there a benefit to using one over the other. DS is 4 months and is EBF, but as I start to leave him a bit more now he'll need pumped bm a litte more often.  He takes a bottle with no problem, but wondered if I should get him a sippy cup to try out, like is it better for him developmentally or will it give him less gas?

Re: Sippy cup or bottle?

  • I fill a sippy with water and put it on his highchair tray every time we feed him solids.  It took him three tries but he finally got it to his mouth and got just a bit of water...he made a face like what is this tasteless wet stuff mom! LOL...he gets better at handling it at every sitting, which is my point to having it there each time.

I have no experience on BM/FF in a sippy.

  • I'd stick with the bottle.  I don't think they have the coordination to hold the sippy and feed themselves at this age.  And some sippies take skill to operate, DS couldn't figure it out until he was almost one.

  • You could try the sippy and if your LO is very efficient with it stick with it, but most likely they won't be all that great with it at 4 months, and BM is important at this age so  you want to make sure he gets all of it. You can add a sippy for practice with water around 6 months.
  • My DD was trying to steal our cups during dinner, so we got her a sippy to use on her high chair every solids feeding. She has had water in it with very limited success, but she drank 4 oz of formula out of it. She's been working with it for the past 2 weeks. :)
