Lakes and Ponds

So I heard yesterday that us prego's should not go in lakes or ponds...any thoughts?  Oh yea, and good thing our August vacation is booked at a campground on a LAKE! I want to be able to enjoy myself, but I also don't want to be worried the whole time that I'm doing something I shouldn't.

Re: Lakes and Ponds

  • really?! :( so much for my summer vacation to our lake house.
at this rate I just want to live in a bubble.

  • I swam in the lake for a week pregnant with my daughter (got my BFP AT the lake) and I am going to do it again this time (2 weeks from now at 12 weeks.  I have also seen lots of preggos at the lake over the last 10 years.   The lake I'm going to is fed by a natural spring so the water is constantly refreshed.

Hope this link helps with some more information, but asking your doctor is never a bad idea :)

  • I plan on swimming in a lake in about 2.5 weeks, while I am 12 weeks. This is one of those particular things that floats around occasionally (no pun intended) that makes my eyes roll, to be honest.
  • You are safe to swim in Lakes and Ponds if your cervix is closed.  If your doctor hasn't told you if you are closed... Which you should be, then you should ask.  They can tell through U/S.  Once you lose your mucus plug then bacterica can be introduced to your baby...thats when they tell you no swiming in dirty Lake or Pond water.  But that won't happen until the end of your pregnancy close to delivery time.
  • I meant to ask my Dr. yesterday but I caught the nurse & asked her. She said it's all fine, just to make sure to use sunscreen.

     Enjoy your summer!

  • Thanks, that makes me feel better.  I wasn't too quick to believe everything I hear.  I know a lot of the precautions out there are over the top.  Looking forward to swimming!

This! I asked my doctor the same thing recently and this is what they said. By August i really think it should be fine.

    • Some lakes are scuzzy due to farm animal run off. Wouldn't swim in those wouldn't not preg either but other than that you're good to go

    • What was your source? I usually try to write these things down and then ask my doctor to either confirm or debunk. When someone says they heard from a friend's mom's sister's roommate that pregnant women should NEVERRRR do ________, I'd just rather get my doc's opinion anyway.

What a PP said about the mucus plug sounds legit to me.
