(XP) Switching to an All Natural Diet

I posted this in parenting, my usual hang out, but I realize the lovely ladies here might have more experience with this one.

I had another discussion with daycare today about DS's behavior. They are going to start keeping a log of his aggression and schedule a parent teacher conference. (he 2.5 yo)

Meanwhile, I've heard a lot about how changing a child's diet can help with behavior issues, and I am contemplating trying to remove all the artificial foods for at least a month and see if that helps him.  (the diet is often cited as helping kids with ADHD)

Has anyone made a switch to an all natural diet? Any book you would recommend? Any success stories?

TIA

  • Ds at that age was showing signs of behavior difficulty too.

In what ways is your child having behavior difficulties? Does he have a speech delay?

Yes, he has a speech delay, but we caught it at 18 months, and his EI teacher is certain he will be testing out at his evaluation next month. I'm going to talk to her more about it

  • I am currently reading a book called Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma & Allergies by Kenneth Bock MD. I am learning a lot of interesting stuff so far-about how a build up in toxins in the body caused by food, vaccines, toxins in the environment are causing these illnesses in epidemic proportions. I was skeptical, but it makes sense. He is not against vaccines, but is for a more of a reasonable spacing out approach. I haven't read the whole book, but so far he recommends dietary changes. Pretty drastic with kids with autusm (gluten and casein free) less so with kids with ADHD-eating more whole foods, less processed foods as well as taking supplements to help the body rid itself of toxins. DD1 has ADHD. She eats mostly a Feingold diet at home-I don't restrict her though if we are out to eat or if she at school or at a friends house but we avoid all artificial foods at home. Honestly it hasn't made a huge difference in her behavior. I have started fish oil supplements (Barleans fish oil smoothie) and I am noticing results with that. It's hard to do all whole foods because she is so picky, but we are trying. DD1 has also seen an OT a few times to help her with her sensory needs to calm herself down. This has helped. When DD1 is hyperactive, I ask her what she needs to do to calm herself down and she will do it. This works at school as well. Good luck!
