Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone else feel this way? (Baby's diet)

Anyone else feel like they're behind the "schedule" on continuing to introduce new foods? My LO eats about 5 vegetables and 3 fruits, but it's exhausting to continue to buy new foods and keep trying them, especially since she fights against all new foods for the first 1-2 tries. (At least she's consistent) I read the diets of all of these other babies and I constantly feel like I'm behind the curve. We make her purees, so I have a good schedule of making / freezing them every week. I know it's a silly thing to focus on because she eats well and is nice and fat :) but at least once a week I get asked at daycare if I've tried this or that and it's like I completely forget she needs to keep trying new things!

  • Have you tried finger foods? They're so much easier than making purees.

FWIW, we eat a very varied diet and I just feed DS whatever we're eating.  I was making purees for the first month he's on solids - but I usually just set aside whatever we're eating that day, and puree it.  For example, if we're having asparagus, I'll set aside some, steam then puree.  Same for other veggies.  Although DS is no longer on purees, I still have quite a bit of frozen pureed veggies in the freezer (carrots, asparagus, cauliflower, sweet potato etc).  He self-feeds now so I just give him whatever we're having... some goes down better than others.

As for fruits, I never bothered to puree.  As long as they're soft enough, I just mashed it up (eg, bananas, mangoes, peaches, pears) and fed it to DS.  Now he's picking food up, I cut them into slices and he self-feeds.  He's been self-feeding for about 3 weeks now... he's 7.5 months (we started solids at 4m1w).

  • I'm trying to move in that direction. It took about a week for her to get the hang of puffs. Before that, I had tried chopped bananas but she rejected those I think because of texture. I'm hoping since she's liking the puffs that I can try more finger foods now.

She's 7.5 months and starting to pick up the puffs, so maybe I just need to try the sliced fruits like you said. I think I just got in such a routine that I didn't notice she was ready to feed herself.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it.  My DD is 7 months old and hasn't taken to ANYTHING yet. I started introducing when she was just over 6mo and she isn't havin' it.  I'll keep trying to introduce new stuff and eventually she'll get the hang of it.
  • You don't have to try all the food but to keep the meals balanced. You could use this: https://earlystart.me/ It provides parents with balanced healthy meals for babies and some assistance when introducing solids. You should just request an invite and you'll get the link to download it on your phone.
