This journey is such a roller coaster--I know you ladies understand. I just hate those times when your child's differences become so obvious--especially when it sneaks up on you.
We were referred to a new pediatric dentist since our last one was a complete disaster (CLEARLY did not know how to work with SN kids despite her saying she was very experienced). Anyhow, I called yesterday to set up an appointment and the receptionist took my number and said that with SN patients, the dentist likes to talk to the parents before making the appointment. No biggie.
He called this afternoon. Long story short, we had a great conversation and he asked a LOT of questions and said a lot of things that were very positive and let me know that he really does have experience with this. We have a great plan set up for desensitizing her and getting her slowly acclimated to the dentist, etc. All great eh?
It was...REALLY it was, but when I hung up the phone (after our 45 minute conversation), I just wanted to cry. Typical kids don't need their parents to spend 45 minutes on the phone BEFORE an appointment just to see a dentist, let alone a plan of action that will take multiple visits. Mind you, I am not complaining about the plan. I'm actually VERY impressed with his approach and feel that we actually have a good shot at getting her to tolerate the experience.
I just wish it wasn't so hard...
Re: I hate when the "sads" creep up on you...
I so get what you're saying!!! And it's true. The parents of the typicals really don't have to deal with this--but try to look at it from a different angle. Think about how much more YOU understand about this process (I find we tend to be so much more educated on things because we HAVE to--maybe not because we WANT to LOL)--and then how this extra TLC is really truly impacting your child. I know it's hard though. As if we don't already spend a ton of time at doctors, specialists, therapy, etc--we get extra phone time too.
((hugs)) but I will say this--finding an awesome pedi dentist is the BEST thing in the world. We found one and he's amazzzzzzzing. Even the hygienests there are fantastic. Our insurance barely covers his insane fees, but it's still so worth it.
