NBNR: pronounce gyro :D

I'm watching Chopped, and everyone is pronouncing gyro differently: GUYro, GHEEro, GEEro, GIro... how do you say it? I honestly have no clue...

Re: NBNR: pronounce gyro :D

  • It's not Guy-ro or Juy-ro which is what I hear a lot. In Greece, it sounds like kind of a long E sound but with a more elegant tongue roll sort of thing... if that makes sense. I was always super paranoid ordering them in Greece.

Yep that well at least that's what my Greek friends call them. Mmm now I want one haha
  • Not sure how to type out how it sounds, but I'll try.

Shzeer-oh. Or, if you're at all familiar with Scandinavian pronunciations, it'd look more like Skjeero, maybe.

Is it close to jeer at all?

  • I pronounce it more like Hero, because that's what my Greek XBF told me to do :)
  • I work in a Greek owned restaurant ... Its YeerOh

  • Awesome: it means that not one out of 8 food industry people on the show, incl. the host, judges, and contestants, knew how to say it right ;p

  • I say jeer-oh (like jeer, mocking something).

DH (and most of the Greek-Australians I know) say it Gere-oh (like Richard Gere).

Kind of. It's pronounced similar to year-o, or zero. I'm really not sure how to type it out just how it sounds.

This.  I would've spelled it out phonetically like this, though: Year-Oh. But same thing!

I'm pretty positive it's this way. But no one ever gets it right. It's a tricky one!

I worked in a pizza place owned by a family straight from Greece and that is how they pronounced it. Customers usually said "jyro".
