introduced solids, now not pooping as much

We started experimenting with solids (avocado and banana) over the past few weeks.  DD was really intereted and met all of the developmental milestones.  She was in fact chewig while we ate dinner, mimicking us and reachng for our food.  Well she LOVES solids, never spit them out with her tongue, would eat more if we let her, etc.  HOWEVER now she is not pooping as much, it took her 4 days to poop the first time (shes never gone more than 2 days between poops) and now we are going onanother 4 day no poop.  She seems content overall but does grunt a lot trying to poop.  I am wondering if we should stop giving her solid food, but I also don't want to stop and then start agian and have to have her system adjust all over....

Is anyone else experiencing this?  What should I do here?

Re: introduced solids, now not pooping as much

  • Before we even started solids DS would regularly go 3-4 days between poops. I think it's not anything to worry too much about as long as she's seems comfortable (DS grunts while pooping/farting sometimes) and as long as the poops don't come out super hard/dry, which would indicate constipation.

This past week DS finally started actually EATING enough solids to change his poop.He demands more and more (especially bananas). Yesterday he had a 'grown up' poop ball in his diaper. It was very easy to plop in the toilet and didn't have the super bad smell I was afraid of. I'm sure as he eats more and more diverse food it'll get worse though. :P

  • I keep reading that eating solids does this to babies. My DD has been going every couple days, right now it's been 5days. We haven't started solids yet, but her Pedi told me it would get better when she started solids? I thought that was weird. But like PP said if she isn't straining I think it's alright

  • I'm sure she's fine, but if you're worried you could try some foods that help with, ahem, output, like pears. Banana is a pretty binding food so that could be part of the reason she has slowed down so much. I'm blanking on other foods, just think fibrous!

  • Be careful with bananas. They're constipating! Maybe throw some prunes in there.

  • Pears, peaches, prunes all help. Bananas, apples, etc make them constipated. When we started, LO was constantly constipated. I introduced pears, peaches, prunes and she did much better. She is allergic to prunes, got a bad rash from it, and doesn't care for peaches, so we normally stick with pears. They help her soooo much and we give them if she hasn't gone that day. She goes daily, So if she hasn't pooped before lunch, she gets pears or peaches.

  • Interesting.  I made pureed pears for DS two days ago and he only had a teeny tiny poop since then.
